    RS2 Seats in a 1991 S2 coupe (3b) and wiring

    Hey

    Ive been a study of s2forum for a long while.. my partners in crime, eriksson and prosty, have been more active than I.. but that has to change as Im in need of your assistance!

    Ive recently, with the help of prosty, bought RS2 front seats \o/ for my 1991 S2 coupe (3b), the purchase went without a hitch. The installation however is an entirely different matter..

    As dkw_dude discovered in a previous thread, the sub-frame if you will of the 3b passenger-side seat is different from the aby one.., explained here:

    and that problem will be dealt with somehow.. not a biggie <; prosty's famous 30nm hands will bend that sucker into submission <;

    The problem arises when one attemps to connect the electrical wiring.. as the 3b (or at least my 3b S2) doesnt have the wiring need for the connectors under the seats, I took a picture of them here:

    What are the functions of these two connectors? We're thinking that the one with 2 pins is like.. the seat-warmer? and that the other one (with 6 pins) is for the electric control functions, ie. the backrest/seat-movement?

    Are these assumptions anywhere near correct? <;

    And if so.. what is supposed to go where? <; (b+/ground)

    Are any of these supposed to be directly connected to the battery? if so, which one(s)?

        You will need the wiring loom for the heated seats and electric functions. I got this from the person who sold me the seats, from an RS2. I cannot say if it will plug into your 3b main wiring loom, however it did plug directly into my ABY wiring loom when i did this same conversion. You will also need the heated seat switches for the dashboard. HTH.

          well, i knew about the dash-switches, those badboys are already purchased ^^

          what im wondering about is more along the lines of the actual wiring.. as im not the thomas alva edison i wish i was <; what goes where and so on.. hope someone can provide some insight into that!

          im looking into the option of buying some used loom for the heating function.. ive already spoken to my local VAG-dealer about the connector for the recaro-control functions.. and will order it tomorrow! (so that part is like pretty much worked out.. unless someone has a kickass idea <: )

          thank you for your contributions so far!

          edit: here's a picture of the recaro-connector.. p/n: 893 971 831 (brown)

            When I fitted my Recaros, which came with the correct loom, I was fortunate enough to be replacing heated S2 seats, so half the battle was already won. The RS2 loom has 2 seperate bundles of wires, joined together at regular intervals, one is for seat heating and one is for seat motors.

            From memory, I fitted them as follows....

            Remove the S2 seats and the rear centre tunnel trim (around the handbrake). If you can be bothered, removing the front centre trim (around gear lever) would make things easier, but is not completely necessary.

            Lift the drivers side carpet from the sill and fold over the passenger side, pulling the S2 seat heater loom through as you do it. Unpick the clips holding the loom to the floor, one at a time, lifting the S2 loom out and placing the RS2 loom in, working from the handbrake towards the sill and then forwards, up behind the side kick panel and up to the relay box above the pedals. (you will have the passenger side RS2 loom flapping around, but it is easier to start with the drivers side)

            For ABY cars...Whilst the drivers carpet is up, remove the rear seat and run a suitable thickness lead from the positive terminal of the battery, along the drivers sill and up into the relay box along with the seat loom.

            Lift the passenger side carpet, remove the passenger side S2 loom and feed it under carpet, over the tunnel, right behind the gear lever. Now feed the passenger side RS2 loom through and clip down. The carpet can be secured with the looms coming through and the passenger seat installed. Leave the drivers seat out to give more room when working under the dash.

            You should now have an S2 loom only connected to the car at the relay panel and an RS2 loom laying along side it. The S2 loom terminates in a large yellow connector (I think...it was almost a year ago that I did this) which unclips from the back of the relay panel and can be replaced by the identical connector on the RS2 loom. That is it for the heating. The other part of the RS2 loom terminates in a couple of fuses (which simply clip onto the same panel in any spare slots) and 2 power lines with spade connectors.

            Connect the new +ve lead from the battery to the +ve seat line and then plug the earth terminal onto a spare earth terminal on the underside of the fuse box. I had no spare power or earth lines availabe under the fuse panel, hence the new battery lead. I connected the erath line to one of the main body earthing pins which happens to be to the right of the relay and fuse panel, by the door hinge.

            Extract yourself from under the dash (and seek medical help in order to straighten you back) then replace the kick panel and install the drivers recaro. Thats it...all done...now go and pose to all your S2 mates

            Hope this is remotely useful

            Cheers n

            Si

                  The dashswitches has arrived and been inserted into the dash.. but no connections for them made yet as the connectors from VAG lag a bit.. (thx sundquist for the switches btw)

                  No luck finding any spare/used loom as of yet so there will probably be one made "rackeltrim"-style.

                  I'll update as we go along..

                  As the car now gets heavier.. a rs2turbo and a rs2-ex.manifold is on the way.. <: (thx prosty).

                    Well then.. I'll start with some pics of me removing the driver seat and then follow up with the latest development on the wiring..

                    1. remove this trim, found at the side of the seat(s):

                    2. loosen a bolt in front of the seat

                    3. slide the seat as far back as you can so it runs off the rails and you can lift it outta the car..

                    4. remove this side panel to be able to salvage the safety-belt clicker..

                    5. screw the clicker onto your semi-new rs2 seat

                    assemble in reverse order.. and presto:

                    as for the wiring.. sundquist helped me make a temporary loom for the seat-adjustment controls.. just connect the b+ to the upper pin in the brown connector under the seat, and ground to the lower..

                    the battle for seat-warmers is still raging..

                    btw, its winter in sweden.. in the 3rd pic you can see sundquist, my borderline "electrical genius" (;

                              you don't need a gt30 in a saab. my saab pulled away from E55 amg with the stock TD04 :-) , and no offence, but if the turbo's so good why is the bonnet open :-) heheh..
