I went out with the rear seat removed today (had been charging the battery an hadn't got round to putting it back in). At idle there was this hissing sound coming from this pipe. Once boost kicked in it went quiet (or the flow reversed).
Any ideas what it is?

That car has been running with unmetered air on vacuum whilst this pipe is disconnected. Be interested to know if that is within adaptation limits of the ECU or whether you have a fault code lurking along the lines of 'lambda adaptation range exceeded' in your ECU !
Yeah, I've had a lambda error for some time. Never knew what could have caused it but looks like you've found the culprit! I also had a bout of overboost protection that mysteriously came and went.
That will be the cause - the engine sucks in that unmetered air under vacuum, so when you nail the throttle and start generating boost - the ECU can detect an overboost situation with excess air (by means of pressure) that has entered the engine without going thru the MAF.
Connect that hose up, clear your fault codes and see if it comes back.
Connected the pipe in question and the moteur fuses are currently out. If this proves to be the answer to my lambda problem then I owe Jas and Paul big time.
Seriously guys this problem has been bugging me for months and I was at a complete loss with it.
Thanks.
I might actually be able to start spending my money on tweeks rather than fixes soon!
Thats the first time i ever saw the battery under the back seat. I've got a 3B and i've never seen the battery in a ABY. I had my back seat out on thursday to run new power cables and speaker wires, I also found that hose after the audi dealer said that the ECU was in the passenger footwell. Just shows that some Dealers don't have a CLUE!
