Is there a piece of polystyrene like foam which fits between the outer rubber seal and the internal door card?

Yes. I think it is part of the door card if I remember correctly.

Great. Thanks. I’ve got nothing on the car at the moment but I’ve just bought the rubber seal and I thought it looked a bit flimsy an probably needed something to pad it out.

Your second picture is a second seal. Audi Tradition has them. I don't have the p/n off hand, but if you search, you'll find it. Fortunately they can still be bought.
