    My Speedo Died today

    Hi problems again
The speedo just died on me today , sitting at about 80mph and it went up to 100down to 70 back up to 90 and down to 0. Nothing for 30 miles or so just sat at 0mph then tried to go up to 20mph 3 or 4 times then nothing..... Dash was out before but that was 500-600 miles ago so the probability of it being a loose connection is slim but not ruled out. Also the odometer and distance travelled bars have stopped just as well the odometer is reading 169976miles.

    Any ideas chaps?

I already fitted bo's guages so fowling is out of the question?

looking into the engine bay kinda look between abs unit and IM and u should just be able to see the inner part of the driveshaft, just above there will be a rubber boot for the electrical connector on it, remove that and you will find the sender...easy to remove but might be easier to work from under the car.

          good luck

hi there i tried the speedo sensor today but to no avail audi suggested that the wires from the sensor have rubbed together and are shorting out?? Do you think that it could be the speedo head on the dash??

              Hi mate,

              Sorry to hear that.

If you like i can lend you a Speedo unit for you to try out.

Its prety much plug and play.

You'd have to take the cluster out, take it apart again, undo the 4 screws holding the speedo in and gently pull the whole unit out.
you can then fit the other one, reassemble and test it.

              Let me know.

              Cheers.

Sounds very like the cluster voltage regulator has popped - had this go on my old Passat, pretty straightforward fix.

Sounds like dirty contacts on the circuit board, had that with every type89 audi i have owned. The speedo unit makes contact with the board with a bunch of pins sticking through it, take it apart and clean the pins with elecy contact cleaner and all be fine again. Temp fix is to give the top of the dash a smack with your hand, works sometimes

                    needle dropping

I recently had a problem with my rev counter - essentially the needle got too close to the face. This lead to the counter first getting stuck at 4 k, then 3 then finally completely stuck at 2k.

                    What happened:

As the needle turns, it gets closer to the dial - if the needle is too close the back will catch on the face and the symptoms get gradually worse. I simply pulled the needle away from the face very slightly (and gently!) - everything is now fine. I also have the 's2_bo' dials - which look great by the way...

                          Ok Guys
Fitted a new voltage regulator just now and still nothing. It could be the speedo head as the rest of the dash is working and the gearbox sensor is sending a signal?? Has anyone else got any suggestions?
