Check the wires that hook up to the sender at gearbox

I had the same problem on my car twice. The two or three wires that hook up to the sender at the gearbox become brittle and break apart from the connector. The connectors are covered by a little boot. Undo the boot to check this. Resolder if necessary.

I forgot to mention that the rev counter works regardless and i just noticed that the trip computer is reading the avg. speed 1 mph, miles to the gallon in 200.00 (now if this were possible than i wouldn't be looking at the needle every time i put my foot down).
I'm not able to work on the car again till after the weekend but i might take bo up on his offer for the Dash??
Might just order a speedo sensor with the stealership in the morning. and take it from there?

        Is the odometer working?
I had the same problem that layuca describes. Instruments were ok. Sensor was ok. Wiring was ok. But the plug was broken. The plastic body inside the outer part was being pushed out of the back of the plug, instead of connecting.
So now I have a spare transmission speed sensor.

just taken out the dash and no apparent faults or loose wires also plasma guages aren't working now don't have time to fix them just now. I didn't refit the dash anyone got an idea how much for a speedo head with the trip computer. This is getting so annoying.

have you checked the speed sensor that goes in the transmittion(or the front wheel at some place).it is the sensor that sends the signal to the speedo. That can be broken

no never resolved it but the garage thought it was connected with a ABS sensor fault, its been at the garage since 19th may and they still haven't started it. I mabye shouldn't have said there was no rush for it to get done.

Just had the the same problem occur after changing a blown rear light bulb

Speedo and mileage counters are not working at all and the avg mpg is set at 23.5mpg regardless.

they have found the problem now, they have to remove the gearbox, and change the small wheel that is spinning past the sensor

my guess would be the plastic drive cog in the gearbox not the sensor itself... the sensor is drive by the cog (which is turned by teeth on the flange off the front diff... if the plastic cog is broken you get no speedo or odometer...
