Peeling? You mean the liquid crystal is bleeding into the display?

Yes you can replace it, but it requires you to completely dismantle the clocks, take out rev counter then remove the LCD display. Not too hard, just remember to take note of all the particular screw locations/bulb locations etc etc.
There is a run down of dismantling the clocks on s2central.net.
If you have small kids, a cat or dog, lock em away first. LOTS of small screws/nuts/washers and so on.

well i dismantled the cluster(s) last night and swapped the speedo from the 'old' set into the new set to keep the right mileage - The Autocheck was bust on the old set, so swapped that out too - got a bit worried when i was dismantling them - two different designs of the Autocheck computer.. thought i'd bought a mini-check by accident!
The old broken autocheck had the red and yellow bulbs in the 'back', whereas the newer ones had tehm mounted in each side of the display part... why oh why they felt the need to change it at some point is anyones guess lol.

I had the rev counter out but didn't even bother trying to take it apart- was worried about the brass screws on the back of the 'motor' part - whether some were calibration screws or something? Where would i get an LCD unit for it?

Anyone know the price of the temp display unit and associated gubbins you get on the S2s? thought i might bang one of those in at some point if its not too pricey?

and yes, i did have a cat problem in the middle of dismantling the clocks... its dead now

Vagparts or dealers. Part number 893 919 203.
Not sure how much they are.

I replaced one of them in a previous Coupe with a secondhand one. I used a set of UN4 clocks, the digital clocks little housing was slightly different to the VDO one I took out, but the actual glass display itself was the same and swapped over without any hassle.
There's a few different autocheck units. autochecks from UN4 clocks, VDO clocks, minichecks, autochecks with OBC dispalys etc.

VDO = made in germany, UN4 IIRC were assembled here in the UK.
General rule of thumb, if the clocks have 140 mph speedo they are UN4, 160mph speedo and they are VDO.

              Spot on Jas

              I'll have a butchers.

Funny, both my Autochecks are from VDO clocks... maybe one of them was replaced at some point in the past or soemthing

If i get time in a couple weeks i'll change the LCD and do a little 'How To' if anyones interested?
Sure its pretty simple though... and i have a spare rev counter to practice on too

No idea, I've never looked that far into it. The FA shows 6 versions.
