    Speedo Probs

    Lo all

just got my s2 a few days ago, been serching the net lookin for answers, and so far found nothing except this forum, so im hoping someone can help me please...

Last night i was out in my s2 (3B) and speedo was working fine, no probs atall..

Got up this morning, jumped into it to go to work and noticed the speedo not working

checked it at lunch time and still nothing (only thing i noticed was the speedo flickers slightly, when ignition is turned on)

when i left work tonight it still wasn't working, then when sat in traffic it started jumping slightly (approx 100 rpm) then all of a sudden, it started to work properly

Had to stop at petrol station on way home, and when i started it up again, speedo had stopped working again

so does anyone have any idea's as to whats wrong ? or how much to fix it ?? and a breif description of how to fix and what bits are needed would be very nice

    thanx in advance

    HI there and welcome!

Well THE best site for S2 info is Pauls site S2 Central located here

Two possibilities, one is the distance sender on the gearbox, it feeds the speedo. Second is the speedo itself.

The distance sender on the box is £10.08+vat, so maybe best just to replace that as 'a matter of course' cheap enough. I'm pretty sure you can just see this sender right at the base of the bulkhead on the box. Not had to change it yet on mine, so cannot advise how hard to change, anyone?

Speedo, that's about £148 +vat and how to remove it is covered in teh technical section of S2 Central.

This is a pretty common problem on the S2's, hopefully someone else will post here some more info for you soon.

I finally got round to taking a look at my sticking speedo... the problem was peeling paint on the dial centre and obstructing the needles circular base from smoothly rotating. 5 mins and a craft knife sorted it.

If you've got the time, its worth taking it out to look at.

      Cheers,
      Nick

Its probably worth saying that removing the needle itself wasnt necessary, just gently scraping the flaked edge was all that was required.
Thinking about it now, very carefully applying some superglue to the affected area, to try and stop the paint from further lifting might have been a good idea... perhaps next time!

I sorted mine, turned out to be a loose connecter on the back of the cluster, as it has been fine since I removed the cluster and refitted it all
