    New Style Flick Keys

Having had a few A2s & A3s as courtesy cars I got to wondering whether the flick keys that they have could be cut to fit an S2.

I think the answer is probably not, but what if all the lock barrels were changed to fit the new key.

Could the electronics for the remote locking also be reprogrammed to work with whatever alarm/remote locking system was installed in the car?

Its just a thought, and I'm not even sure if the expense would justify the end result, but if it's at all possible, I'd like to give it a go.

I totally agree. I have thought about this before but not really got anywhere. The easist option would be a 'flick' key cut to fit a standard lock but I can't find any.

As for programming remotes thats pretty standard stuff isn't it? People get new remotes all the time that just need to 'learn' the code before you use them.

Let me know if you get any further on this.

AFAIK - the immo transponders in the current style of flick-knife-keys are NOT compatible with the 1st generation immo as fitted to the S2 so that would be a gotcha for the MY95+ cars.

However for non-immo cars then just maybe it is possible as long as the newer style barrels can be made to fit the S2 door and locking assembly.

sorry to say the later barrels will not fit.... totally different type, bigger diameter, very different fitting method.

The barrels could be made to fit but it would entail changing the whole handle and surround. The main problem would be the remotes. On the latest cars whick have 'flick type' keys the immo is built into the dash insert and is coded through the diagnostics port. The earlier type are coded the same way with the immo in the ECU (If memory serves me correctly).

The car is coded to the remotes as opposed to the remotes being coded to the car. In order to get them to work with an aftermarket alarm system you would need to now exactly how the alarm signal from the flip keys and how the signal the alarm needs is coded.

It could be possible with all this info the reprogram the remotes to send the right signal but it would require some serious software and hardware skills. Not to mention dealing with a 'rolling code' system.

To retro-fit the 'flip type' system to a modern Audi (or VW) is ridiculously expensive and that would only require off the shelf components not custom chips and programming.

Sorry to put a downer on the idea. If anyone can work out a way of doing relatively cheaply then I would be up for it myself.

you want a cheap solution? how about this.....

The golf / corrado fraternity have been at it for a while now!

And the immobiliser in the late S2s are externally powered transponder types I think - meaning there is just a small glass tube buried in the key which would need swapping into the new key (but it'd have to remain in the same position to get power from the antenna).... oh and they're VERY fragile.

Putting in Aftermarket alarm fobs may prove a little more difficult.
Not my bag but hope this helps...

It all seems a bit too complicated for me at the moment. Looking at the VW "How to" it seems quite easy to fit an existing key to a flick type handle, but that would still leave the electronics side of things.

I think I will give it a miss until someone else has done the R&D and then I'll just copy theirs!

We are working on the electronics, but we have a Clifford alarm system and not a genuine Audi alarm.

If I remember correctly, last of the line type 89 / B4 Cabriolets used the flip style fob and blade, the door handles used the same surround as S2's, but with different cylinders. The same applies to the ignition lock, fuel filler cap and trunk lock. The early A4's used the same or similar handles, (I think) though the ignition lock was different.

Good point - our '97 2.8 Cab had flip type keys.

The cab was very like our RS2 to be in (even smelt the same) as it had the (optional on Cab) same black leather recaros. A bit more leisurely progress though

All of the locks on later cabrio's are different. In order to retrofit them you would need complete door handles as the outer plates are different and the lock barrels mount slightly differently. The same goes for the ignition barrel, you need to change the haousing as well.

The glove box barrel is a straight swap but the tailgate barrel could be a problem. They don't do one thats a straight swap for coupes or avants so it would require some tinkering to make it work.

I started typing this ar about 7.50 and only got round to finishing it now (10.47). Work just gets in the way.

Sweeper, I think the handles are secured in place with a torx - head bolt on one end, and a swivel locking clip on the other. Remove the bolt, as for the clip on the barrel end, you need to swivel it round (can't remember which direction) then the surround should come off, the rest of the handle comes off from the inside, after disconnecting the lock rod and door - opening rods. Disconnect the heated lock connection if fitted and the rest is easy, I think. HTH
