Rocking/pivoting/tilting seat problem on S2 avant

I have a strange problem with the front seats (mainly drivers) in my S2 Avant.

When driving down a smooth road like a good dual carriageway and you go over some slightly undulating bumps, nothing severe but enough to transfer your weight up and down slightly, I get a knocking/rocking/tilting sensation from the seat. It's probably only a few millimetres but it's enough to feel.

I can actualy recreate this when stationary now also. I can hold the steering wheel, then push my body back and down into the seat, done carefully you can repeat this with enough frequency that someone can look down the rear of the seat to see what is happening.

I got my wife to do this as I looked because as you are probably thinking, I thought it would be the bushes on the seat runners.
While this 'rocking' is happening the bushes and arms leading to them are solid, no movement at all.

So......where is this coming from? is it the tilting mechanism? are there any bushes that can be replaced?
I'm finding it difficult to drive at the moment because of this and it's really dampening the enjoyment of the car because I can't relax into the seat.

You must know what it's like when your mind fixes onto something and blows it out of all proportion. This rocking is driving me demented!

    HELP
    Please.

Ive not seen or heard of this one before!
I assume you have looked under the seat at the front when doing it stationary too?
All I can think of is some play on the front fixing?

I had this problem on a golf before. If it's not the bushing in the front mount you'll have to get the seat out. There'll be a stud / screw working it's way loose and you'll find it easily enough.

I've already had both seats out completely, removed all the old grease from the runners and bushes then re-installed them into the car in an attempt to cure this.

The front mount on both seats it absolutley solid. This definitley feels more like the 'tilt' mechanism is loose somehow.

It seems to be on the same plane as the tilt system so this is where I am aiming my thoughts.
The other piece of evidence is that this is a 'sprung' feeling leading me to think that the tilt mechanism is at fault somehow.

If I move the back rest back further (beyond where I would normally be comfortable driving) you can 'over balance' the problem and get no rocking unless the road is particulary bumpy and you get the frequency dead on to create the problem.

I'll be at the MRC rolling road day tomorrow (Saturday) if anyone wants to have a feel

        Thank you.

Do you have the seat in the higher or lower position?

It is in the lowest position but I have tried it in other positions and the result is the same, bl**dy irritating I can tell you.

Does the passenger seat do it too?

I think it does but to a lesser extent. I'll have a proper go later.

I seem to remember by better half saying hers 'rocks' as well but she wasn't bothered by it.

                Needless to say, I am.

I have just been out cleaning in preparation for the big MRC day tomorrow and I thought I'd have a play with the seat.

It seams that in the next notch up from bottom it seams better, but I have yet to try this on the test road on the way to work.

                  Happy days? hmmm maybe.
