    Seatbelt cables?

So the coupe has some strong metal cables coming from the steering arm and into the seatbelt retracting unit.

Are the cables some kind of safety tighteners or what?

    Can they be removed?
The metal covers for the cables are very rusty, as the car was like a swimming pool. I would like to remove them, but don't wanna but them back to the car if they are "not needed" for normal seatbelt work.
And of course the cables are on they way every time I try to work with the steering etc.

EDIT: And I'm thinking that the cables are not fitted correctly as they are mounted on the steering arms with zip ties! They can't work in an accident?

procon ten cable - if you do a search you will find info, its a safety feature that pulls the steering wheel away from you in an accident.

      Programmed Contraction-Tension or "procon-ten" info

If you do not have an airbag steering wheel, you definitely should make sure that the ProConTen system is working properly because it might save your life (the cables should be attached to integral brackets on the steering column).

        Edit: Too late

          Thanks for your replys.

I searched the forum and came to a conclusion that if I have a six speed gearbox there isn't anyplace where to fasten the cables?
My car has a 6 speed transmission and the cables were fastened with zipties to the streering arms. So they are just "hanging" there. So no help from the cables in a crash. So I'll take them out.
