Suggestion for a Locking Drivers Seat Belt (static)

On the later Avants the front passenger seat belt and the two other rear seat belts will lock if one pulls them out fully and then allow them to retract. This allows the passengers to be held in place with effectively an old fashioned static seat belt.

A bit like a static four point racing harness, but obviously only three point, but factory in appearance and very practical in use every day.

What I did was buy a seat belt for the front seat passenger of a LHD car, and install it in my RHD car.

It was expensive from the dealer, but allows me to be pinned into my seat, the new belt also retracts effortlessly naturally being a brand new belt.

I have the part number if anyone is interested, but not just in front of me right now, but wanted to post it before I forgot.

Separately, if your existing original seat belt is slow to retract, one can fully extend it and trap it in this position with a bulldog clip for documents and wash the belt in soapy luke warm water and a soft nail brush, rinse and let the belt dry fully before allowing it to retract.

The cause of the belt being slow to retreat is the build up of dirt over the years on the belt which causes the belt to become stiff which causes it to be reluctant to bend and coil up around the metal loop at the top of the B pillar and also to coil around the seat belt mechanism itself at the base of the B pillar.

HTH other members on here. I'll edit this post and add the part number for a RHD Avant in due course.

    Any comments welcomed.

    Thanks.

Tell me more, re the pinning to the seat and the airbag.

There is an electrical connection on the seat belt mechanism at the base of the B pillar.

I find myself doing a similar thing with the normal retractable seatbelt..

        - buckle up and tiighten / retract the seatbelt as much as comfortable (breathe in) and give the seatbelt a quick tug to lock the retractor. After this pressure on the belt from your hips will stop the retractor disengaging and holds you nicely in your seat.

Wouldn't be an issue if you didnt slide around in the stock seats so much. I think I do this most of the time now... makes it much nicer to go around corners at any sort of fun speed.
