    Ignition Barrel immobiliser sender

Hi, I`m having a problem fitting a new ignition barrel and the sender for the immobilizer and was wondering if anybody could help? The cars an rs2.

I`ve followed the excellent guide here:

which was really helpful and I got a new barrel and ignition switch from audi.

The problem is that on the new barrel it has a black metal cap which sits around the key hole as per the pictures in that thread:

My old barrel has a larger circular metal housing containing what I presume is the immobilizer sender. Now I got the sender off the old barrel and ended up destroying the barrel in the process as the sender has an internal spring to keep it in place. I tried drilling the metal cap on the new one to get access to the spring to ping it off but the metal is pretty hard and I snapped 2 drill bits on it and its barely made an impression.

Anyway after a search through this site I`ve found pictures of barrels with the metal cap but none with the sender attached. Is there a simple solution here? is the normal process to tape the sender to the back of the dash near the keyhole or something? or should I be looking at getting some better drill bits? or am I coming at this in the wrong direction

Got an image showing the old barrel, the new one and the sender. Had a good look at it before and there doesnt seem to be an obvious way to get it off without drilling it?

Does anybody know the approx range of the immobiliser sender? If I secure it behind the dash just under the ignition barrel will it still work?

Hi, did you get anywhere with swapping the reader coils across? I have similar problem with my A6 - my coil has failed.

As for your S2, it looks like you have an immobiliser model but the replacement part is not immobiliser (hence the black metal cap). Drilling could damage the barrel and render it useless.

Have you tested the range of the reader? Am thinking of doing exactly the same so I don't have to change keys...

        ta.

          Hi, thanks for the reply.

No progress as I cant get the cap off. I just had a look at the epc and it lists a few different barrels, some with read coils, so I guess audi gave me the wrong part despite me giving them the cars serial number. Looks like I`ll have to buy the proper part which is unfortunate as I cant take the one they gave me back due to marks from where I drilled (or rather tried to drill) it.

I had to put the car back together as I needed to use it, I tried putting the sender behind the dash by the key hole but it didnt work, not sure if thats because its too far away or because the signal from the new key is stronger/interfering with my old key. The sender is now hanging below my dash and I`m using the two keys to get it going at the moment.

I guess a bodge would be to tape the old key to the sender and hide it behind the dash which will keep me on the road till audi get the correct barrel in.

I think in your case putting the sender behind the dash by the keyhole has a good chance of success, worth a shot.

turns out my problem was in the ignition switch after all (there's a 'key in' sensor which wasn't working).

Still, not 100% sure of the reader so I'm going to pick one up and keep it in the boot - if it fails again I can just wire in behind the dash, taped to an old key/transponder as you suggest.
