    Legs and Knobs

    Just a quick curiousity.

My main complaint with my S2 (apart from the back brakes being f**ked, the steeting wheel not being on straight and...) is that, due to having fairly long legs, if I adjust my seat right for the pedals, the gear lever is awkwardly far forward for my arms.

Any other tall S2 drivers find this? (no, not you Sonic )

    Is there any remedy?

I think it might help if the knob was a bit higher, so I don't have to reach forward and down, but just putting a longer shaft on is going to increase the throw - not what I want.

The bottom of the gearstick is attached to the linkage rod pointing forwards, it is possible to loosen the bolt under the gear stick and slide the bottom of stick forward relative to the linkage which will tilt the gearknob back slightly. That might give you a couple of cms??

Just an Idea...others might confirm that im not talking B.S......hopefully...

A longer shaft and a short throw shift kit could get your knob higher up but stockish throw? I have seen the vw shift lever extensions on ebay but don't know the thread size of the vw or the s2.

If you have a non aurbag steering wheel then its a 5 min fix to get it straight, use your palm to twist off the horn button, unbolt the wheel and pull it of the splined shaft, rotate o straight and refit. Never tried an airbag one, think there are instructions somewhere on here.

Other option, get a set of recaros and lower seat subframes, that makes the gearstick relatively higher.

I wonder if the adjustable steering column from the 100s/a6s could be grafted in?

I'll see if anyone refutes you on this and if not, might try - thanks

I have a short shift kit on already... so I could comprimise back to stock-ish throw.

I've got non-airbag... didn't realise it was that easy! Cheers!

For me (6'3") if i set the pedals right i am too far from the wheel, set the wheel right and im too close to the pedals. I find i also move the seat position depending on what kind of driving i am doing. An adjustable steering column would make the world of difference IMO.

Anybody feel like grafting the steering column out of a urS6 into a coupe? Steering wheel's too low and a bit far away in my case.

As a stump I never found the positioning difficult to get right for me, but I guess you just have to have the back more upright to get your shoulders further forwards for the hand positioning, while still having your backside far enough away for the foot positioning on the pedals? I know this will also bring your head nearer the roof of the car, but you taller geezers have to suffer sometimes, don't you?!! Finally, us shorties have a reason to be cheerful!

(Alternatively, a spacer to pull the steering wheel back a bit, and some kind of offset for the gearlever ...maybe there's a market for offset knobs!)

Cheers for the responses guys. Good to know I'm not alone with my length problems.

Where my seat is now, I've got some kinda comprimise between pedels and the wheel. Ideally moving the wheel a bit would be good too, but the gear stick is more of a problem.

My S2 is gonna be off the road for a bit while I do some work anyway, so I'll see if I can come up with any imaginative solution.
