Custom dash display - boost, EGT & lambda

Right, as seems to be the case, just as I think my car is behaving itself, it decides to do something to annoy me... this time it's the digital readout on the dash that's decided to start to leak ...and having just rebuild the driver's side window too.

Anyway, it got me thinking - what about replacing the mpg meter, which let's face it, is the purveyor of doom and misery to all S2 owners, with something far more useful. This is far beyond my clanky abilities butto someone with a bit of time and determination, I'm sure that something could be devised that worked a treat

    Any ideas?

IIRC, there was a guy who IIRC hooked up a box of tricks to the URS4 OBC and displayed that kinda stuff

The refresh rate of that display (computer) is pretty slow.
However, someone did hijack the radio integration to do lots of useful stuff with the autocheck display.

It was called the TDS-1, wasn't it?
      Look it up.

What about a new system, including the screen? As mine's started to go, I'll be replacing it anyway.

What would you want it to display? I guess a display unit wouldn't be too hard, the little box of magic to control it would be more complex.

I'd imagine the computer display is already uC controlled.
I have not looked at the instrument cluster, but the logic can't be that hard.

Of course it is possible that it is not running off of a separate chip, and just using it's internal one time programmable ROM.
In that case you are pretty much screwed, as you can not alter anything.

Items in the title were what I thought might be a good plan

For EGT and Lambda you need a separate box anyway.
Because for a WBO2 you need uC heater control.
                  EGT needs junction compensation...

What you are saying is 100% not possible.

I have moded a cluster or two in the past and have always wanted to do something along the lines of what Andy wrote.

This is as far as I got:

But i never actually used it for long as i didn't manage to successfully move the indication/warning lights.

Sitting on the fence as usual

A separate box which ouputs to a screen in the closks, which replaces the MPG readout etc. is about what I was thinking. You plug the sensors in to the box and then can switch display to either 1 or 2 ouputs, depending on space available. You'd have to change the screen but that's not an issue, as long as it offers some really nice functionality.

That's the sort of thing, certainly has the potential

I have been planning on mounting a VEMS round display where the trip comp or autocheck is. The biggest challenge would be actuating the button on the display face.

It seems to by possible to active the button with a Analog Output.
