    Tar sound deadening removal

I've been doing a lot of work recently to stop the leaks in the car and today I noticed that the water that's been getting into the cabin has got in to the cracks in the sound deadening and underneath it too

I managed to chip some of it off with a plastic tool to avoid scratching the paint but it's not exactly doing the best job in the world. Do I need to use heat and a scraper on it and then get some anti-rust primer to seal it or is there another way?

There's also a load of adhesive on the floor from where the old sound deadening was put down (this is the stuff that's painted, so I assume was on the car at a very early stage!) and so I'd like to clean that up as best I can, to make sure I protect the floor in the best way possible.

All help gratefully received as ever.

Pour liquid nitrogen on it, then hit it with a hammer, if you heat it it just makes a sticky mess.

liquid nitrogen is probably best but dry ice also works.
wear proper gloves and sleeves. ive been left with permanent scars from dry ice pellets doing my quattro.

I heated mine up with a heat gun and scraped it off with a plastic ice scraper. Then thinners on a rag to clean up the sticky residue, left no trace of it

Yeah, might have to do that, as I don't have a science lab in the spare room

You might crack the metal floor if you do that.

You can buy freeze spray from plumbers merchants that would probably do it if you could find a decent way to apply it, plumbers wrap the pipe in and insulated jacket and then freeze it. I just waited till it was cold outside and it was slightly brittle and used a hammer and flat screw driver.

Oddly enough me and a mate stripped it all out of his mk1 golf 2 weekends ago using a mini blowtorch and a scraper then with a bit of brake cleaner cleaned it up. Looks good as new and hasn't scratched it! Be careful not to bubble the paint or scratch it with the scraper though!

That's not going to happen , you pour a little on to get the tar down to about -50 deg c and it will crack.
To reduce the ductility of the steel underneath you would have to submerge the car in liquid nitrogen.

I had images of you filling the footwell with it and whacking it.haha.
Seen a picture of an oil rig steel walkway that had liquid nitrogen spilled on it and it cracked like a piece of sheet glass.

I spent hours with a hammer and chisel, a hammer drill is great and very quick but will go through the floor very easily!
