Noise reduction - prep up the insulation

I post few photos here about the project that I did for my car to help my ears in the long run. 18 years had left it´s mark in the orginal butyl insulation and my 3" exhaust is´t the quietest so I ordered 6 square meters of Dynamat Superlight (lighter than the factory stuff that I took out of the car) and some 1/4" Dynaliner.

now I let the pictures do the talking

First i took off the floor mat, spare, and the insulation mat

Then i took off the rear seats and the rest of the upholstery

Next was the time for the old butyl to leave the car - some elbow grease needed here

and some thinner and beer - remember to have good ventilation in this point

After the old stuff is out it is plain sailing (and measuring) with the new stuff...

For the best outcome is important to try to get all the air pockets out under the Dynamat. It is handy to have sharp stanley knife for this job and a rubber roller. After a good layer of Dynamat it was time to apply the Dynaliner to smooth down the "echoes". Make sure that you leave enough room for remounting the upholstery when finished.

After that install everything back to the car.

Then it is time for the doors to have the same treatment. It is much faster though because there is nothing to remove after the door panels are off.

Makes huge difference for road noice and also for the sound of the speakers when the Dynamat stiffens the structure.

The whole process made a huge impact in the road noise and also the resonance of the body panels decreased considerably. I recommend this for everyone as a good upgrade. In my case I still need a new back silencer though, to make the car more stealthy - i do not like to use head sets anymore

Dynamat sheets where 174€ (6,6 square meters/6 packages) and the Dynaliner was 100€. I was first going to do the floor also with Dynamat, but maybe later in some point. 6,6sqm was enough for the doors and sufficient amout of insulation for the luggage compartment.

It's good to put some insulation inside the doors as the original is just two strips of paper

These dots are not rust, it's a glue from strips.

I'm working on this also but not finished yet.

I have used some cheaper stuff than dynamat. It did make a difference but I haven't removed the original sound absorbers. That's probably why my car is getting so heavy

The problem with getting control over panel resonances, is that you need to add weight, to bring the resonance frequency down ('cause that's what you do, you don't delete any resonance). The adding of weight can be bothersome for those that want performance over comfort.
There are some lower cost alternative asphalt-based panels. With this material, applying is best done in summer (sun) time, as the material forms much, much easier (and sticks better, as the metal of the car is warmer, to "melt" the glue).

                just my 2 cents.

I have to weight the old stuff that I took out. I would say that with this lightweight Dynamat the effect is like I wanted and the weight stayed the same alltough added more material.

Excellent work. Bet most of the work was in getting the old stuff removed and clean before applying the dynamat. Any idea how much the old insulation weighed against what you have fitted?

Pretty much like so. It is quite fast to apply the new layers after the base work has been made with accuracy. I did not have to heat the new layers when applying because the job was done in a warm garage.

The old stuff removed weighted about 5,4kg and the new "Superlight" Dynamat was about 9,5kg, so I gained some more weight but less sound and vibrations

9.5Kg isnt much in the big scheme of things though with the S2 not being the lightest of motors at the best of times

I'm sure I read on here or audifans once that someone had used some kind of roofing felt/stuff with a silver backing sheet
Noise reduction was very good and a fraction of the cost of dynamat

Weights not a problem as my coupe is pretty slow anyway but getting older I do like a bit of refinement
For what this cost me so far I could have bought an S2

That's what I used in picture above. It's a bit thinner, so for the same effect you have to apply at least two layers. Also some of these materials gets hard in cold winters and loses some of it's effectiveness until it heats up.

Have you dona anything with the roof ? I'm just wondering if this Dynamat http://www.pontiacperformance.net/Te...namat_Roof.jpg won't fall down during hot day ... I had insulated the roof with some material, don't remeber the brand ... and it lasted till first hot day ...
