Another way to remove the door card / door trim

So.. I needed to get access to the window switches, and read the post to remove the door trim on this forum: http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4326

It looked like that I have to put 4mm allen key through the two mysterious small holes under the door handle. the holes are not only too small for the 4mm allen key, but also something is blocking inside them.

Here is the picture of one of the holes. The hole is blocked and, strangely, the hole is not perfectly round.. More internet search suggested to use 4mm allen key and Youtube video seems to confirm it. But somehow it doesn't seem to apply to my case.

So I took a flathead screwdriver and pushed the blocked hole, in a hope that it might be a tap that holds the pieces together. I felt something inside clicks and the door handle cover poped out!

Indeed the handle cover was fixed to the door by tabs! Why doesn't my car need the allen key? Maybe that's the difference between the Coupe and the avant (All the DIY writeups and videos were for Coupes / Cabriolets)

Anyhow, I had had hard time with removing the door handle cover, but now I know what to do

Each Audi model has their own method to fix the door card.

Audi C4 - URS4 has only one hole in the door handle.
S2 as described in your link.
    etc etc

Interesting, I thought S2/RS2 Avant's used the same fixing method as Coupes, Dave is the man for this, sure he'll be along with some part No data soon.

I believe that different markets had different types door cards.

For example your cards have the deep sloping pockets at the front which use the better pop-fit design of handle fitting. Whereas the shallow pocket style door card use the 4mm allen fixing. I seem to recall these design differences can be seen on coupes, cabriolets, sedans and avants in different markets.

The UK market cars have the inferior cards, manual air con and radios for example. Naturally.

          Possibly.
RS2junkie told me that his RS2 (UK version) has different door pockets and glove box lid from mine (Germany). In fact, one of the option codes in my car says "door pockets".
It's interesting to see variations in small details.

The later B4 sedans in the USA had the "clam shell" (as seen in your pic) plastic door handles which don't have the allen key. They are easier to remove and replace than the allen key leather wrapped door handles. My 1991 20V Coupe has the leather handle while my 1996 Cabriolet has the plastic handles. Both cars are North American spec.

I believe the handle type it's related to the B4s equipped with or without double airbags rather then market/country.
We have a 1994 RS2 in our Club with the lower pockets 4 spokes wheel with airbag and older glovebox cover no passenger airbag.
Handles on this RS2 are with allen keys feature

My RS2 has double airbags and same for the Cabriolet (RS2 1995 Cabriolet 1997) and "clickable" handles
