    Headlining Adhesive Problem...

    Help,

Have left my headlining in for retrim in Alcantara, they chap says he can't the new fabric to stick to the panel ?? Removed all the old glue but for the new material won't stick, he says it might be because somebody (me !) tried to use a spray adhesive ??

Any ideas ? Is there a sealer that can be used or is there a special glue ??

I have seen the glue he uses and it is like evostick, an impact adhesive I think....

    Any advice appreciated ?

Is it foam backed alcantara? or just straight onto the headliner?

    What glue did you use?

      Irish2,

      Just spoke with him.

The material is not foam backed, he is using Alpha 1350 contact adhesive and has tried Weyside 3416 spray...

      ???

I used 3M Super90 with my foambacked headliner, and I am unable to remove it without destroying the foam.
When I was doing my other trim pieces I found that Super90 soaked into/through my faux alcantara material too much so I had to use a different adhesive as it wasn't foam backed.
But I cleaned and cleaned the headliner first , that took me hours, then sanded it with a rough grit paper. If he isnt removing the old glue or foam then he has no hope of it sticking.
If he cleaned it properly then it doesn't matter what glue was used before as it will be removed with the cleaning process.

But did you use something first or is he just shifting blame?

          Irish2,

          Thanks for the info.

I think its down to him, I did spray some carpet glue in there but only in the back half of the headlining (up to the sunroof), he is having the problem at the front near the screen and the grab handles.... I think it is a cleaning issue.....

What glue would you use with this material, unbacked alcantara.....

Have heard cleaning with petrol is a good idea ??? any suggestions....

He says he has done hundreds of head linings and never had a problem.

Yea the front of the headliner around the sunvisors is the most difficult, as the material has to stretch on two directions, I dont know if your material can do that, my faux alcantara couldnt.
Maybe using foam between the headliner and the alcantara might give it the little give it needs, but if super90 would work with your alcantara then I could recommend that.

This was where I got mine

It wont work with the super90

              Eric,

Thanks for the advice, I have passed on the information.

Lets see how much of a fight this is going to be.

All the pillars are trimmed up, even the rear roof trims, so its got to be done...

              Thanks

                Eric,

Went to see the headlining today, I think the problem is the surface preparation was not good enough, either it was still wet or something. He was using a solvent based cleaner (smelt like thinners ?) which left the surface almost shiny, as thought it was still wet. The glue is a contact adhesive, like old evostick ?. He has used the same glue on the pillars and its holding fine, so I am convinced its a surface preparation issue on the headlining itself.

So, he is ordering some more material, he said he would remove all the old glue, and start again. I am going to work with him this time.

Is there a danger that the solvent cleaner has contaminated the headlining board ?
Need to make sure its completely dry, can I use a hairdryer to help it dry ??
Sanding down, but only after its completely dry ...
Then glue and fix. I am suggesting to have a seam around the sun visor area as I think the material is not flexible enough to follow the contours....

If we abandon this headlining and go for a new one, what is the best way to remove the old lining material, I have heard that water is the best way, but drying it could take a while in the is weather....

If it does not work second time I will take it back from him and find somebody else..

Appreciate any advice you can give...

                PAUL

I honestly am not sure, I have only done the one but thinners might not be the for the best, but it should dry out.

I think the surface should be cardboard like, if its not then you should roughen it up a little.
if its shiny it seems like the last glue is still there, and all he is doing is polishing the old glue into the headliner.

Other than that I dont know, but glue choice is very important, as the roof gets quite hot in the sunlight. If the glue can hold up to that kind of temperature then it should be good.

buy a used avant one its quicker than trying to dry it and i think its faster and more logical way to do it..

i done my headliner about a year and a half ago, I have just noticed it coming away around my sun visor.
there is no way I can go through taking the liner out again so am going to peel it back and glue it up in situ what do you guys suggest as glue options , last time I use a spray adhesive that came with the headliner material.

3M Super90 is highly rated, unfortunately I dont have any long term experience of it yet but its high temp/strength is ideal.

Sorry to butt in on this thread, but I'm going to be doing the headling on the S6 at some point. There's nothing actually wrong with the headlining (yet!), I just don't like the grey/cream colour and want it to be black alcantara or fake suede.

Would the easiest thing just be to take the headlining down, leave the material in place and stick unbacked alcantara (or similar) over the top of the existing?

                            Cheers,
                            Tom

Even though you see no sign of it, the foam backing on your headliner material is rotting. If this fails completely then the headliner drops, with the added weight of the new material you are certain to have problems.

The short of it is, that there is no quick way to do the headliner. Its off, clean and reapply new material.
