All I will say is the original UrS4 Audi OEM Motorola hands-free car phone in the arm rest was 5W and had a much better range than the cell phones even around 2005. By Sept 2009 there was no more analogue service in NAmerica and the phones became useless boat anchors. I removed mine from the armrest as well as the amplifier/receiver in the boot. Sitting in the garage gathering dust.

European C4s were equipped with AEG phones.

Uses full sized SIM card and doesn't work here anymore too.

AEG. Ah-Ay-Gay. (just the pronounciation that I learned, not a comment on lifestyle preferences).

Makes sense. Motorola was big in the US at the time (for the NAmerican UrS4/S6s)

It would be pretty cool if they could work still

Were the old phones hands free?

              Yes. At least the AEG.

I'm wondering how easy it might be to cobble together a modern Bluetooth handsfree receiver with the mic, speaker and case of the OEM phone.

It would be cool, but only if it works as handsfree and you could still pick it up and use the phone part like 80s badass

That might be illegal in many countries - at least while driving.

Here are some older hints to do that:
