Dan check the connections, i think there are 2 on the gearbox, one on each side, cant remember which one is the speed sensor, but they are the same style plug as the rest of them maybe take it off, clean if necessary (and possible) and plug back in, check the condition of the wires too, might help?

I've had this problem along with many others

I think one of the guys from the forum (David?) tried the gearbox sender. IIRC it made no difference. I solved the problem by taking the display to bits and cleaning all the contacts, this has cured it for the past year. My speedo would stick at 80 mph and there was no peeling paint on the dial.

If tapping on the speedo in the car unlocks the speedo, isn't it more likely to be a dodgy connection in the instrument cluster?

Mine speedo also failed yesterday, isnt moving at all, also the BC gives strange output. I think it is my speed sensor. The advantage is that I can finally slide threw corners, because the quattro system stays disabled above 15 mph, and I only have rear drive.

should be pretty cool if you can put a switch between the speed sensor so you can shut him on and off.

I've got a similar problem! often the temperature gauge isnt working! and my speedo has also once stopped working! and when the car is driving on cruise it sometimes judders and at the same time i saw the speedo falling down and going back to its position again!!

i've heard that you would have to take the instrument apart and re solder the contacts !!!! some of them could have innefficient welding points! due to vibrations!!

i'm gonna have a go at it! and i will let you lot know what the results where.

It's not the transmission speed sensor. BTDT. If it was, the odometer wouldn't be working.

Temp gauge and the fuel gauge have power supplied by a little voltage regulator screwed to the back of the clusters printed circuit foil. If BOTH gauges seem to be a bit 'odd' then try changing that part, its pretty cheap! I've seen the speedo needles stick because of the white paint lifting of the face and catching the needle, stopping it in place! seen that two or three times over the years! caused by using the wrong wattage bulbs in the dash giving off to much heat and lifting the paint!

Martyn, I have a fuel gauge that wont go to empty (tried a new tank sender - no change) and a temp gauge that is intermittent. Could you advise on the part number and price of this component? I'll give it a try..

                          Cheers

Quattro system stays disabled above 15mph??? Impossible in an S2 as the system is mechanical and permanently connected!!! Sounds like your rear diff is permanently locked.

My TDi speedo is very random. 1st step is to check the electrical contacts in the binnacle as this has solved it in the past for me. I rely on my Origin B2 for speed info

I am pretty sure it stays disabled, I can really drift over snow. and my abs light stays on, till i enable the quattro system again.

Yeah. That's your diff lock staying on. Both rear wheels turn together. Try turning tight on tarmac. My mate thinks it's the donut button! I have to watch him when I leave him with the car.
