  • Airbag wiring

I took the wheel off my new car to straighten it and found this below. The guy I bought it from did say he had disconnected the airbag and the self cancelling wasn't working on the indicators.

I would like to get the airbag to work as I don't see the point in having one if its not working. The wheel seems to be a later cabrio or early A4 wheel.

The brown wire is that for the horn? Everything else seems okay but I don't want to connect the airbag if there is issues with the wiring.

    Steering wheel conversion options

You have the wiring correct: brown wire = horn, red plug = airbag.

The reason that the signal light cancellation isn't working is some doorknob cut the cancellation tab off the clockspring instead of doing a proper conversion.

Steering wheel conversion options (Method 3 is the best):

The cancellation tab shows here, on the right side of the photo

Thanks, self cancelling doesn't bother me as I do it myself as habit.

As long as connecting airbag is okay that the main thing for me.

Looks like the doorknob also clipped off the red pin/plunger on the upper corner. Not sure if that impacts the airbag function or not. (It might).

Yeah I noticed that. Further question on this, I had the following codes when scanned.

          Address 15: Airbags Labels: 8A0-959-655.lbl
          Part No: 8A0 959 655
          Component: Airbag IV AUDI D00
          Coding: 00254
          Shop #: WSC 06313
          VCID: 70E85AA030508DA19EF-4B1E

          3 Faults Found:
          00588 - Airbag Igniter; Driver Side (N95)
          32-00 - Resistance Too High
          00588 - Airbag Igniter; Driver Side (N95)
          28-10 - Short to Plus - Intermittent
          00589 - Airbag Igniter 1; Passenger Side (N131)
          28-10 - Short to Plus - Intermittent

When I checked this morning there is no passenger airbag as I was using the car to take my son to nursery so wanted to be sure before putting his seat in.
I actually prefer the non-airbag steering wheel so my well fit one of them.

The red pin is to keep it centred so it doesn't rotate in transit and damage the clockspring
There are approx 7 revolutions from lock to lock, so it will be centred on 3.5 or thereabouts. The PO may have inadvertently put the clockspring on one turn out, say 5/2, so when you get to full lock it has damaged the internal contacts.

            Testing coil spring

            Notes:
            • ◆ The removed coil spring must not be rotated.
            • ◆ The coil spring must be removed and disconnected for testing.
            • ‒ → Connect multimeter V.A.G. 1526 to airbag unit connector.
            o ‒ Specified value < 1 ω (continuity)
            • ‒ If the specified value is not reached, replace coil spring.

You should carefully turn it from one full lock, to the other and then count back to the centre and just pop a pin in to hold it until you’re ready to re-install it.

I’d suggest when you try the airbag, turn the ignition on from outside the car, that way if there is an issue you won’t get a face full of steering wheel
