    SM flywheel gear rattle bandaid

SM flywheel gear rattle is quite loud on the 0A3 gearbox, inside the car to the point where sometimes people ask me what's wrong with it
I noticed on the B6 there is an piece of sound deadening that fits on top of the shifter box under the gear lever. I got hold of one a while ago and found a half hour earlier to see if it would fit:

    Looks like this:
Its quite heavy for what it is, the plastic is kind of rubbery and the foam is pretty dense.

    B6/B7 shifter box:

Fits like so - needed a little trim to fit round the mounting bolt for the trim retainer. Otherwise

Centre console back on: its made to measure. The centre console fits round it perfectly, like it grew there.

It's made a real difference. The rattle inside the car with the windows up is now faint. There is a also a little less road noise in the cabin. I guess it won't be such a bolt-on fit for the 01E shifter, but for £10 off ebay, worth playing with if you are fed up with the rattle

You SMFW lovers do know that there was a reason Audi (and VW) went for OE DMFWs right? (To take the stress off the transmission gear faces)

      DMFW info: http://forums.quattroworld.com/s4s6/msgs/24536.phtml

Skip to 2:14 and wait to see the graph at the end.

Yep understood but show me a dmf that holds over 700nm and fits our cars. It's always a compromise.

Just wanted to flag the issue for those on the fence DMFW vs SMFW. IMO, the DMFW is the better option for a daily driver and, typically, daily drivers are making less than 400 hp (RS2 hardware with appropriate new software). Beyond that, the likelihood that the car is a daily decreases anyway.

This was interpretation of modifications vs daily driver that I made some time ago:
