    Stereo woes

    Hi all,

Right i'm about to loose it big style and if anyone can help me out it might just save my sanity!

A bit of history: When i got the car it had the standard sony head unit and standard speakers. I firstly put in my newer Sony head unit, no problems. Next I replaced the fronts with the MB quartz that most have and the rears with some Focal components. I have used this setup with no problem for the last two years.

I am now removing some of the stuff i have put in in order to sell the car. Currently i have the standard fronts, standard sony head unit and some JBL component rears. The problem is that the rears sound OK but the fronts are really quiet on the radio but deafening on the CD (and also not very unresponsive to volume control). I have tried both the MB quartz speakers and the standard ones, with and without the rear speakers attached , but whatever i try i get the same problem.

If anyone has any ideas, please help!

Your sony unit is knackered. If you get differing volumes from the CD to the radio your pre-amp in the radio circuit (the quieter) is up the spout IMHO.

my old pioneer head unit had a setting where you could adjust the volume for just the tuner the idea of it was so that when u changed source it didnt deafen you

        Source Level Adjustment (SLA)
The SLA (Source Level Adjustment) function prevents radical leaps in volume level when
switching between sources. Settings are based on the FM volume level, which remains
        unchanged.

is what it says in the manual
Nautic Blue UR-Quattro RS2spec ABY20v kkk26/27 hybrid,Bremsport Brake Kit n some other Gubbins.water injection. Mihnea tuned Management The old Bus

Cheers for the respsone guys. I thought about the impedence so disconnted the rears and this made no difference. If the radio pre amp was knackered would the rears not also be quiet?

I had another play with it when i has calmed down and if i took the cd changer phono inputs out of the back of the head unit and everything was fine(apart form the cd changer of course!). Also if i use the cd player , i can hear engine wine through the stereo, i wonder if this might be an earthing fault, but will have to give that a go tomorrow evening.

Sounds like the internal radio amp has gone. The front and rear have seperate ampliers so it could be the front mosfets have had it.

Ground isolation loop will cure the whining or regrounding the radio wiring to the body shell is a trick I commonly use on my stereo

Funny i got that with a sony head too. when the radio is cranked up it is loud, change to cd and it blows the speakers. Some sony heads use different settings for different sources, try changing your cd settings ie bass, treble and fader and then matching your radio to the same settings? Hope that helps but i've known to be wrong?
