I think you're absolutely bang on here. I believe the best bet is for a custom made mdf enclosure, to fit into the spare wheel well. Depending on the calcs for enclosure volume/porting etc maybe a 10" or 12" sub plus amp.

Lose the spare wheel - join the AA (or even better ADAC and get free recovery!

The enclosure can be screwed down tightly onto the lug normally holding the spare wheel down. The carpet can then be re-trimmed above around the speaker/amp cover. A remote head unit control can turn the unit off for grandparents/dog and still maintain full storage capacity.

you can buy a sub to go straight into a spare wheel. http://www.avtoybox.com/pltr-12.html

Pioneer used to do a TS WX50 but I can't find much mention of it anywhere. I'm sure there are more out there. It's been a long time since I was involved in fitting so i'm maybe not 'down with the kids' any more.

I know there's a thread for a build of a spare wheel sub for a coupe... But I don't really want to get rid of my spare wheel. I don't really want to go through the enclosure design either, I just want a small active sub that'll be inconspicuous.

If I'm successful i'll post details and pics.

that's why the ones that fit into the spare wheel where it is are handy. they're not the best sound in the world but if it's for a bit of bass and not competition standard it's fine

Should be possible, can prob re mount one of the current slim subs or make one that uses a fibreglass mould
