    Front and rear speakers

Cant anyone tell me what size speakers will fit into the std places? I dont want to go to the effort of door builds, just want to improve over stock. Any good sugestions. Will be powering them via a 4x100w Kenwood amp I have lying around from my old car.

I have never tried to remove the speakers either, what sort of job is that?

Up front you can fit 4" speakers, but it's tight and you'll have to cut a bit:

    (left = stock speaker)

Rear is 5½", the whole side interior must come off to remove them.

      Strange shape speakers?!!

Are the original 4" and what needs to be cut to fit 4" speakers in there?

      Got any pics?

Thinking of putting some new 4" in the dash along side the other 4 speakers upfront and 6x9 in the rears

The front speakers are 4", but the ???(steel thing that holds the speakers together) is very small. The speaker to the right used to have four big mounting ears like the one in the top of the picture, but they have been cut away for the speaker to fit in the original position.

Ah cheers, i see what's been done, does the grill just pop of or does the dash have to be taken apart to get access?

I haven't had a good luck yet, think i will do later.

Yeah, a screwdriver at the edge of it and it pops right off. It's just snapped and taped into place.

Im hoping to just replace the standard speakers with upgraded ones. Not too bothered with subs etc, just like it to sound nice. Has anybody got any tips as to what speakers to use? Which speakers sound good?

Hi Beetie, I have replaced the front speakers with better units ( not that I thought the originals were bad!)

The units I fitted were made by JBL and the model number is GTO402, they were £40 from motor world about 3 years ago. They were a tight fit, If possible the wires would be better fitted afterwards. It will go but be careful, They do have a very good sound stage and I think they're ok and I'm the one who listens to them!

I'm using Amega Q-Comp-40's in the front, but have added a pair of Q-comp 6" in the door panels to play the mid-bass.

And one thing - throw away the original grills - they are way to airtight! The original speakers sounds a lot better without them IMO.

Today i bought some std size speakers. Some Sony Xplod 10cm for the front and 13cm for the rear. plumbed in my 4 channel amp and left the 2 channel amp to power the 10" sub. Sounds so much better than the stock speakers.

BTW front speakers are fun to fit :s

yep, fronts are easy to replace, I put in a 2-way compo (so with the tweeter separately on top) and what an improvement that was! rear is more difficult (but not that important, I never sit there anyway) since non-standard. the grills probably have some sort of felt inside which is easy to remove, so the ori grills can be kept in place.

tip for some realy good LS: Focal , not cheap (equivalent to 2 - 3 tanks of petrol), but very good.

If you want to get decent sound from the standard size 13 cm speakers, you must get the best speakers available because the small diameter midrange-woofer can't pump enough bass. The best is Focal IMHO, though top of the line JBL and recent MB Quart is also good. Henkjan, the 4x100 watts will overdrive the 4" so if you have a hi pass filter on them, put it to somewhere close to 100 Hz to ensure long woofer life. I have Focal utopia 16,5 cm at the doors with the tweeter on the dash. With the 4" one might consider a decent subwoofer......that would compensate for the small mid. Replacing the rear side panels is not that difficult and a good speaker there would also improve overall sound.

yep, a 4" cannot handle bass very well and if tit's not filtered out power handling is limited and distortion increases. Sound quality improves dramatically if you go from normal radio output to a HP filtered amp driving the LS, as I experienced im my A6 where I got amazing good sound out off the standard speakers by just driving them from an amp instead of from my Sony radio.

I have mine not yet filtered, since my amp (Harman Kardon CA60Q) does not have a built-in HP filter and the natural roll-off below 120Hz matches the LP in my radio for the sub. I will make a 6dB filter (should result in a 18dB acoustic) and matching separate 18dB LP for the woofer later (but that will have to wait for other projects, I'm happy with it for now).

I have the rear speakers as rear-fill only, I have disconnected the tweeters and the volume rather low, so improving quality there is low on my to-do list.

Well as you are all getting so technical....

I have installed Kenwood 10cm 2 ways in the standard dash locations. These are run from my 4 way kenwood amp with the amp high pass filter set at 180hz. I also have Kenwood tweeters set in the upper dash round airvents which incidently fit perfectly. These are also filtered with standard kenwood filter supplied with them. The rear speakers in my car are standard and run off the head unit but are high pass filtered at about 100hz using the adjustable filters built into my Kenwood PS headunit. The Sub woofer is then also run off the amp and low pass filtered at 120hz. I have turned down the bass settings on the head unit to try and reduce the bass that the front speaker get, however the bass is turned up on the subwoofer channel to balance it out. I also have the treble turned down a little too as this can be too harsh with two way speakers up front as well as tweeters.

I find my set up to be a very powerful but clean sound. Certainly not a high street booming system, but I have BTDT and I am now looking for HiFi quality in the car. It sounds very good to my ears and I have no complaints from passengers!

Hope this is of interest to the ICE lovers out there!

                              Cheers.
