    Roof Antenna,

Cant believe I’m posting about an aerial, anyway i called into a friend today who works in a main audi garage, first time i've ever parked my car and come back to find half a dozen audi mechanics looking round it :-)

My point, yes there is one, they gave me a new Antenna for "free" because mine was old and bent, the difference to radio reception quality is amazing. They were saying there very delicate because they are amplified. The slightest bend or crack really affects its performance so they say.

    Cheapest fix i've ever done

My Sony CD / radio only receives FM. AM is c*** but is slightly better if you stick a screwdriver in the aerial input socket - not really practical is it?
I've been told the aerial base is amplified but how come only AM is affected and FM is OK?
Can I get hold of a new / re-con base or anyone got any other ideas of how to fix it?
I'm new to the forum and impressed with the knowledge around - keep it up!

Mick if the base is faulty then you need a new base, you can get it from Audi ( for a price) or a similar one from German, Swedish and French or Eurocarparts. They are not renowned for their longevity or good operation. Mine is not good and I will look at it. You could try one of the new Audi A3 shark fin aerials or one of a Beemer ( spit).

Fm uses a shorter wave length than AM, FM is about 3 metre wavelength whereas AM is around say 260 metres. So for a decent aerial you need a half wavelength i/e. 1.5 metres or 130 metres for AM. You can't have that so they use electronics to impedance match. I.e. the amplified base helps pull in the AM signals.

          Mick,
I don't think those GSF ones fit very well as they have a different roof fitting. The hole in the roof is square & the GSF ones are designed for a universal fit. See here for tips on fitting a Vauxhall one

A word of warning on the Vauxhall ones. They are angled much steeper than the original Audi one. I think it is 60° whereas the Audi one is 40°

It just looks a little weird on a flat roof. I think the corsa had a bit of a slope where the ariel sits, so it slants backwards a bit more.

The Vauxhall one looks fine on the Coupe though (I have one on). It was a steal at £19. I wonder if the VAG ones are cheaper through Skoda / Seat or VW dealers though?

Looking at the BMW shark fin closely it seems quite big. I've just been looking at the NEW SAAB Convertible which has a very small sharkfin-ish on the boot lid. How feasable would this be to fit the S2?? What shape hole is the cut out on the S2 Saab?? Any parts boys out there have any details?

this bolts straight onto the S2. The plug on this one is NOTHING like the S2, so you have to cut off the S2 one and solder wire to wire. One last thing.... if you want to receive radio stations, don't fit this aerial! it's GPS only!! Personally I don't have a radio, so that doesn't matter to me.
