I would like to upgrade my 4" co-axial front speakers. What are the largest/best front speakers anyone has fitted into the dash? I would be happy to use the window vent for tweeter and even have a larger grill, as long as it's fairly low profile.
What is the largest speaker that would fit, albeit with a bit of work around?
I *think* i have seen someone graft 5" speakers into the dash but you need to cut it and will also need a low profile speaker.
If you want bass up front the best way is custom door builds.
Personally I have decent 4" Kenwood coaxials in the std locations, tweeters in the air vents and a 10" sub in the boot to fill in the low frequencies.
Sounds nice to my average ears!
Cheers,
Steve

Quality big speakers will also have depth and it's the lack of depth that will cause problems.
Bigger speakers will get you better bass but as you'll never get speakers in the dash big enough or good enough to give decent bass. You're better off with quality 4 inch (or 5 inch if you're prepared for cutting) speakers in the dash along with door cards and/or a sub as Steve suggests.
I'm pretty happy with the MB Quart's in mine, a big improvement over stock! I'd say go with a good smaller speaker and good amplification for a stealthy install that'll sound great. A sub can be added to pack the extra bass if required.

Here's a pic of my dash:
Bingo, thanks Ross. They look the business. Which model of MB Quart are they?
I had thought about this, but was worried about the side windows being harder to demist with a car full??
Any problems with that guys?

Never had that problem myself with tweeters mounted in the air vents.

I'm not sure what MB Quart's they are sorry - I think I'd have to pull them out to find that one out. I will have a look through the paperwork and post up if I find anything. I didn't do the install so can't comment on the difficulty.
The side demisters never seemed to do anything anyway, don't miss them...
