    What stereo setup for Avant?

I want to improve the sound quality of the stereo in my car, but don't know where to start. I currently have a Sony head unit, which is capable of outputting 52x4 watts. I replaced the front speakers with mb quart units and the rears are not the original ones.

    1. Should I get an amp? If so, should I go for a 5 channel amp and where is a good place to locate it?

    2. I assume the rear door speakers were originally woofers, so does anyone know a good replacement units that look oem?

    3. Should I get a sub-woofer and if so where should I put it?

    Thanks

Is def recommend getting a sub, a seperate amp for rest would help too, as in reality the figures quoted on the head unit ore quite optimistic.

      avant sound system

Hi mate , i,m in the process of upgrading my system in my s2 avant.I have taken all the sound system out of my audi coupe before selling it and i am now transfering it into my s2 .I found the avant lacks bass and have added a vibe mono amp and 10" sub to give it an all round depth of sound. Next step is to amp up front and rear speakers. But to be honest it sounds so good you could get away without amping up the rest of the speaker. So try a sub first and see what you think.I was very suprized with the result.I am not a bass head by any means but it has transformed the sound so much. i am now only going to amp up speakers because of when i take out the sub for extra space it would be nice to have a more powerfull sound.I will put the amps on the left and right side walls of the boot. In the coupe the amps where on the backs of the rear seats but the avant has nice flat side walls so they will sit on there and i can sink the cables behind the walls .I have thought of sinking sub into the floor of the boot but will leave that for a later date. I am running a kenwood 4 x 50 head unit , jbl 160 watt front speakers and was using a fosgate component kit in rear but just got a good deal on a vibe midrange set which are 300 watts which would need amping up.Have fun bud

I agree a sub will really bring a system to life. An amp would also help your MB Quarts... That being said if your head unit has a built cross-over you will be able to remove some of the low frequency from the 4 main speakers (let the sub do the work). I believe it is hard for a head unit to provide the proper power for bass.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I have bought myself a second hand 4 channel alpine amp from andyglym and will try this, before getting a sub. You are right it is mainly the bass that is currently lacking, but i don't like the idea of a sub taking room in the boot.

If its just some extra bass you are after and want to maintain boot space you could try a slimline like http://www.fusionelectronics.com/car...tive-Subwoofer which would probably fit under a seat if needed

You don't need a sub of you have pretty good speaker set up. I had Alpine Type R components in my rear door running off an amp and they sounded brilliant, for when I had to take the sub out. Had to change the setting on the amp to make sure it was right. But I also had a Vibe 10" sub with built in amp, which really added to the overall sounds. I still have the sub and amp and plan to add it to the Skoda when I have spare money for good components which will be the Alipne Type-Rs again, that will be my third set then.
Just some finishing touches to do now

I have a PIONEER TS-WX11A with MB Quart speakers and the sound is very good. The sub is never going to win any competitions but to provide the extra depth I wanted it is great. I have it tucked in front of the spare wheel in the boot of my coupe. Struggled to get it under the front seats but it is so small wherever you put it it won't really be in the way.

                  Dimensions (W x H x D) 280 x 200 x 80 mm

It can be had for much cheaper than £150, futher details of it are shown here though: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PIONEER-TS...item5891582e66

I do have a 10" Kenwood with JBL bass amp in the loft, haven't fully given up on rattling windows! I just like being able to fill my boot with junk! Prefer the noise of the exhaust most of the time though and it's always good to be able to listen out for the next problem that needs fixing!

I had two 12" subs in my boot for a while. 1 was an alpine type s one to match my two sets of type s components (still waiting to go in) and the other was a Polk sub. The Polk is all I have in now and I love it. Still waiting to put my components in though

Old cars always need a decent stereo, it's amazing how many problems can be cured by simply turning up the volume......
