Opinion on DIY Spring Install ?

    Guys,

I have been quoted £250-£350 + VAT for labour to have H&R springs fitted. I like to think I am quite handy with a spanner, is this job within the scope of a DIYer (with the correct tooling & a willing mate) ?.

If any of you guys DIYed, would you recommend it ?, & what else did you replace whilst you changed springs?

    Cheers,

    Imran.

springs are easy enough,i would do the top mounts at the same time, probably worth going for uprated ones, worth checking all the ball joints and wishbone bushes etc.. while your in there too.....

Yeah its not too bad to do, could do with two people as you take the strut out to fit the spring and make sure you have some big sockets. Also get wheel alignment re done afterwards

That seems expensive to me - how many hours are they reckoning and does that include alignment when its finished ?

Its an easy enough DIY job for an experienced owner but some special tools are required to extricate ball joints, a special keyed tool and cutaway socket are needed to disassemble the fronts. Plus you need good spring compressors, axle stands and the usual milarkey.

Reckon on renewing track rod ends when you are in there - and expect lots of fun getting the rear ones to release for adjustment !

Hahhhhh maybe £300 isnt so bad if you don't like the unexpected hassles of pulling your own suspension apart.

Easy job for a DIYer. Only hard part can be separating the tie rod ends from the front struts. They can be very tight on Audis without the correct tools.

I've changed springs/shocks about 4 times with my friends (different cars of course). Now I'm able to do the job in 2 hours if I'm not alone.
