Having nightmares of knocking noises,help

Hi there chaps
Am new to the forum, so go easy on me.
I know this is an S2 site and I've only got a Coupe quattro 20v, but hey whats a turbo between friends?
The problem is a knocking noise that is coming from the front suspension (nearside) and it's driving me nuts. It's a lot louder the rougher the surface but can be heard on all but the smoothest of surfaces.
Local garage says shocks (these were replaced 2 years ago. "bilstein") and a couple of mates with Audi's say strut top mounts (this was replaced 3 years ago )
Any ideas?

Will probs replace n/s and o/s top mounts for blue one's while I'm on.

I had a 90 20V and had to replace the arb droplinks twice in one year - probably becasue they were cheap ones form EuroCarparts.
