The rattling will not be cured by a gasket/seal change, although this may as well be done while its apart, the 2 thrust washers need replacing inside, these are basically the only wearing components, as the rest is low load. A fluid flush helps aswell. I see no reason why these pumps wont out last the cars themselves as they are a good design, i will find the post showing how to overhaul the pump.--Trust me its easy, the hardest part is getting the coupling off the shaft which requires some fast high temps i.e. heating torch and a glove or a 2/3 leg puller when cold.

        pump noise

Just another opinion for you i have just fixed a horrible noise from p.a.s similer sounding to yours, one on a 2.0 16v coupe and another on a 2.2 10v coupe both of the pumps were working fine but the mounting bracket for the pump was missing three bolts on one and four on another car on taking the pumps off the cars all i needed was a few m6 bolts cut to suit, or go to your steelers for the right one to secure the adjustment and mounting braket and heh presto no whirring or groaning clattering noises

And new washers for the pipe but you can do it in position on the other cars

        worth a look

Catch me on MSN sometime, I'll update you.

@ Tim, you can usually tell a 7A pump from an S2 by the colour of it. S2 versions are a nice alu colour, 7A pumps (original ones at least) are a hard black anodised colour. (I know, I've looked at loads of them whilst in a Victor Meldrew strop)

Have you briefly removed your pas belt to see if it's really the pump that is making the noise? though I know the old screwdriver to the ear is hard to beat in finding things like this out.

I asked about the 7a version as there is a guy on ebay breaking his 7a 20v so he has one for sale. I'm gonna try and have a look this weekend and take the belt off and check the bolts as suggested elsewhere on this thread.

I almost wish I had, then I could blame myself Instead some lowlife so called enthusiast did the dirty on me.

The day I buy anything off that clown "audibits", will be the day I start liking BM's.
(If anyone wonders who "Audibits" is, do a search on eBay for "S2" )
