My first "06" project is too replace the subframe bushings but I've heard nightmare stories concerning the removal of the bolts from the welded nuts that hold the subframes in. Is there an expedient way of taking these bolts out without breaking the welded nuts away or breaking the heads off the bolts? Is there room to spray some release fluid in there? Can a torch be applied somewhere that will aid in removal?
Marc,
there is no way around that issue...if the welds are weak, then they will break. I've broken those twice using and impact gun and never by hand. Usually, those bolts are never too tight, but a little PB Blaster the night before won't hurt anything.
good luck. ;-)
Don't forget to try to tighten the bolts first, that helps.
I've undone a lot of rusty bolts in my time...
it it feels very stiff, work it back and forth lots of time.
When the bolt is out, clean the captive nut with a tap and use a die on the bolt, use copper grease when it goes back in ( unless it needs threadlock) can't remember.

2 things wrong there, don't reuse the subframe bolts replace with new and do not use copper grease on the threads (unless specified by Audi) as it serioulsy affects the torque figure for tightened bolts.
Only ever taken them off so I can't comment Corey. I seem to recall thinking about it that there may have been blue threadlock on them.
I have taken off, put on etc. I would hate someone to follow the wrong advice and have a failiure.
That's why you buy new ones, they come with the correct pre applied threadlock.
