    S2 suspension for Urq

I'd like adjustable suspension on my Urq, and I think switching to S2 two-piece struts would be a good idea. Then going for a coilover setup of some sort. There are plenty of Type 85 boys who have done this conversion, but I think it involves changing the entire suspension/drivetrain...

I'd really like to keep my gearbox and diff(016 with Torsen, rear LSD). Can anyone tell me:

    What parts are needed?
    What problems will I face?
Will the offset/track width be different?

So many questions...All comments are welcome guys!

    Front:

2 x S2 front struts and hub carriers
2 x type 89 / 85 track arms (Ur ones have huge ball joints)
    2 x S2 driveshafts (bolt fitting)
    2 x S2 wheel bearings
    2 x S2 front ABS sensors

    Rear:

    2 x type 89 ('88>) 2 piece struts
    2 x type 89 (88>) driveshafts (bolt fitting)
    2 x type 89 (88>) rear track arms
    2 x type 89 (88>) ABS sensors

Not sure what this combo will do to the Ur quattro's wide track. If the driveshafts front or rear are too long, they'll have to be professionally shortened and balanced, if too short, you'll have to use specers to allow them to connect to the drive flandes.

Not too sure the original ABS control unit will be compatible with the later type sensors, I doubt it though. The later control unit isn't plug and play either, you may need to replace the loom and hydraulic modulator with one from an S2 (3B), together with the control unit from the same car.

Hydraulic modulators have a shelf life, if you buy one that's been off a car for over a year, the chances are the pistons may have dried out, corroded and seized. Make sure you obtain one you have to remove from a car yourself.

The units fitted to type 89 (88>) Coupe or 90 quattro are fine. FWD ones are different, as the piping is completely different from quattro setups. Quattro brake circuits are split fron to rear, while FWD ones are split diagonally.

I got a set of cast lower s2 front arms for my URQ. Havent tried fitting them yet, but defo the ball joint is different. I want to stick to URQ hubs (I have 2 sets), can i fit the s2 arms useing a "special" ball joint? Eg a RR 20v URQ unit? Or are the s2 cast arms no good to me?

You can't use S2 lower wishbones, cast or pressed steel. The only lower wishbones compatible with the Ur quattro or type 85 Coupe / 90 quattro are type 89 80 and 90 items.

All B4 based cars have different front wishbones - they are shaped like a lower case y, so are unique to the B4 80, S2 and type 89 Coupe. Type 85 Coupe q, 90 q ans Ur q have lower wishbones shaped like an upper case Y.

Although the S2 items will physically bolt to your Ur quattro subframe, the ball joint will not locate with the Ur q strut. Force it to line up and the wheel will not be central in the wheel arch!

You can use the cast wishbones form an Ur quattro 20V

YEA! you may fit ANY main gearbox/engine front end!! it will fit right in!!!! urquattro20v@ try my msn,i will tell the prob you will have, and the others too.....you will have to use all parts for the front end,the propshafts too.change the internals for the propchaft,on the gearbox(o16) to 110mm.loose the inhexbolt in the middle, and change it from another 016tranny(from 200 fx) then it will fit.you will get better brakes too, when they are 280 x22 too(some have 276x25)......have done that on my 32b sync, you have to use the asym lowercontr arm from diesel, and 19mm ball joint

Wow I have to say that's more work & parts than I anticipated. @Delta: If the entire suspension and drivetrain including box/diff is exchanged with S2 parts, will that be more of a "plug and play" deal?

There is of course another option, and that is modifying the original one-piece struts! A lot less hassle it seems. But then I need some other solution for fitting rear anti-roll bar.

Maybe some of the URQ owners on here can comment on how to to make it handle great for track days?

I wouldn't hold your breath there... very few URs get driven properly on track days... and I wouldn't think many of those will have gone for adjustable suspension.

A UR with healthy stocks and springs is basically a decent handling thing. Tweaks of the alignment with more negative camber never hurts handling (though eats tyres quicker if you go too much).

My advice for track days - PROPER race tyres - the difference is night and day.

Beyond that you could try stiffer/adjustable antiroll bars - no idea if the S2 or RS2 items (or Whiteline rear) are thicker than UR originals - or if they fit directly onto the UR.

For more serious transmission mods there is always the small matter of differentials. A V8 rear Torsen will give you an LSD at the back, and big money and hassle will get you an LSD in the front in the shape of a Quaife ATB.

Bigger brakes always goes without saying of course - not strictly a handling thing but if you can't scrub off high speed quickly with the middle pedal then you might have major problems.

The pre '82 ur's had a rear anti roll fitted to the subframe, this will allow you to fit one without any modifications.
Dialynx do an adjustable platform for the ur suspension, well they used to I don't know if they still do?

Pressed steel lower wishbones are 3 bolt fitting for 80 B4, S2 and all type 89 Coupe.
                    Type 85 and type 89 80 and 90 are 2 bolt fitting.

Ok so the cast lower arms for the s2 are no good for my URQ. Anyone want the cast arms for the S2? Anyone have cast arms that will fit the URQ? Are they really that much better to be worth putting on instead of the stock pressed units? Or would seam welding the stock units be any use?
