Loud Clunk when setting off from stationary at full power? propshaft?

Another glitch I have to sort with my S2 is that when I have tested a hard accelerating run from a total stop I get a really loud CLUNK/THUNK noise seeming to come from underneath the car just behind the rear seats ... seeming like from the centre line of the car (propshaft area basically!) BUT it is ONLY on the intitial take off then the car is quiet as anything for any other driving ?

Is this Driveline shunt?? (ive never owned 4x4 before!)

I read the propshaft refurb thread with interest but cannot work out if it applies to me....

Do you think it is the main propshaft bearing that is knackered?
It only seems to do it from a dead stop as when I'm driving normally it is totally fine but I have to test it more fully this weekend as I have not been able to go out for the long hard drives it is really begging for as yet :mischeif:

Is there any concrete test while driving to ID if it is this bearing or could it be a Bush or ??

    TIA

It sounds like driveline shunt. It's probably the rear diff mounts, possibly gearbox and engine mounts being worn.

What are the miles? I get some of that too, there's a bit of play in my diff that has 145k on it now. I'd like to try replacing it and see how that goes, if I can find one used that is tight as a drum (anyone out there?). Diff mounts are tight and the others all seem ok. Definitely play in the diff. Take up the slack a little on the start, or just make uber-smooth changes and you'll get used to driving it too.

        hehe...thanks..AGAIN mate

Can you wise me up to what kind of a job these are??
Diff mounts?? Are there upgraded ones available and what is the job like?
Will I need special tools and what sort of time please? say a 2 hour job etc

Gearbox and engine mounts?? You mean causing the shunt?

the noise is definately from the mid/ rear of the car and only on hard starts//

        Thanks

I still get a bit of driveline shunt. I did all the diff mounts last year, but I'm yet to do the gearbox and engine mounts. Some of the solid ones look tempting. My old diff mounts practically fell out! The shunt got a lot better after replacing them.

            Thanks Ross

            Mileage is 160k....
140 k with full VAG history not that this means that much!!

So your is actual play in the diff yes?! Does no one rebuild these Diffs?? I know its done for other cars but have no clue yet about S2's.....
I wil check my Diff mounts this weekend and go from there to engine mounts/ gearbox mounts.... > play in the Diff itself

            THANKS

It sounds like you bought a scrapper - Sell it to Sal before you loose all your cash, and find another.

Are you sure it's the Diff needs rebuilding mate??
I'm 90% sure that fitting the powerflex diff bushes I ordered will cure the problem...... The diff doesnt seem to have any play that I can identify but I will know better once I have done the Powerflexes....i will post back then.
if not Im going to strip the Diff out....and rebuild it

Had the same problem, and changing to powerflex only made it worse.. seems like I have som play in the diff aswell..
diff mounts and gearbox mounts has also been replaced... so in my case it's obviously some internal problem.. eighter gearbox, diff or propshaft, or, most likely: all of them.. three smalls makes one big problem..

I have new bushes with powerflex diff bush.

I can see play in drive shafts and diff.... will replcae the drive shafts (about £1000 just in parts) and then see if diff still has play in it..

S2 Dude, how much for parts to rebuild ur own diff?

If I were you I would hold back on the Drive shafts and get in touch with somewhere like one of these two for a rebuild price.
That may fix the majority of the problem if the wear is in the Diff gears or bearings...

I'm not sure how much I will be loooking at in parts.......if it needs doing (and I dont know it does yet..it may be fine..) but I would reckon on about £200 + my own labour....

where would u get the internals from for the rear diff?

edit : from the links above offcourse

So you suggest getting the drive shafts rebuilt?

Ski, sounds like the same problem I had recently, clicking noise (intermitent) at slow speed, the noise would disappear for a while then return. Turned out to be rear diff mount and the divers side, rear driveshaft inner CV. CV was refurbished, gearbox mount from VAG, approx £250 including labour, would be a nightmare to complete without a car hoist, drive shaft was a pig to release. Hope this helps.
