Done the rear dif mount today no problems there but found that the frount driver side shock is leaking all over the brakes how much of a job is this will I have to do both sides and may be the back ones to,which are the best replacements and how much, like me my piggy bank is shaking with fear
At the very least you must replace an axle set (ie. 2) but I would replace all of the shocks on the car. Be prepared for the possibiltity that you will need to replace some other components while in there, top mounts, bump stops etc.
If funds allow then it would be a good idea to repalce with Koni's rather than the stock items.
Cheers for the info corey thought as much I will get a price for the konis and see if I can do the lot , see you;ve got an s6 avant same here amuch underated car imao . many thanks Lou
Not a bad job to do if it all comes apart ok, you should be able to split the strut without having to take it off the bottom, once out you will need a set of spring compressors, a special tool to remove the top retaining nut (halfords sell these), and either the audi tool to undo the retaining collar for the shock on the shock tube or a big pair of slip joint pliers. it helps if you have a decent bench vice to hold the strut assembly in whilst you are working on it. I have done this a few times and really the only major problem can be getting the collar off as it's usually got rusting threads, the last time i did i need to use mole grips on the handle of the slip joint pliers.
As Corey said you may as well replace the top mounts and bump stops too, i am not sure if koni's have an internal bump stop bilteins do though. The rear is the same process as the front btw.

Not quite accurate, a type C4 S6 is not the same configuration as an S2. To do the front shocks you don't even need to lift the car off the ground, although doing it this way does ****** up your front camber settings.
Lou, if you need a guiding hand you are welcome to bring it to the workshop, where I have all the tools required to perform the task. It only takes an hour start to finish. I can even supply you parts.
Rears a little bit longer to do as it means removing the strut.
Oops i was assuming that it was an S2 not an S6, front shock removal is simple on the S6 if you have the right audi tool, takes no more than 15 minutes a side. Remove the top nut on top of the shock, mark the camber plate undo the 3 nuts, remove top mount insert strut tool undo retaining collar pull shock, insetion is the same as removal.
It is an s2 I have both but its the s2 that has most of the problems but where geting there at the moment my piggy bank is emptying quicker than the s2 runs.Thats a very tempting offer corey and much appreciated I might take you up on that ,wherabouts are you .lou
