    Alloy Top mounts

Anybody know the specifications of the spherical bearing in the alloy top mounts doing the rounds? I've had a set on my S2 for about a year and the nearside bearing has gone already! Having checked the offside, it looks like it's going too I'd have thought they would have lasted a lot longer

My passenger side is starting to make a little noise after a year. I also added dust shields onto mine to keep dust and water out of the bearing as i didnt like the fact they were open to the elements. Heres is the blurb from QRSport,

"Full rose jointed top mount, made of AT30 alloy with a spherical bearing, 16000lb load rated chrome stainless steel ball ptfe lined socket, locking collar, allen key. Far superior to any mount, these are hard anodised to 30 microns. Not excessively noisey on the road or track, will fit standard suspensions or fully adjustable, up to 2 1/2 inch spring diameter."

Can't understand what's happeneing to yours but....

mines are just fine. How do you know for sure it's the mounts?
Is the racket that bad? Here in the States, in my area we gat bad snowstorms and they lay down salt on the roads which is bad in certain ways for cars. But my QRS mounts are as solid as the day I put them in.

i can get the bearings for about a fiver though work, they are pushed in with a circlip to retain them

the reason they are not lasting is beacuse that type of bearing is not designed to take load in that direction

i said this from the start if you read back through the threads

pm me if you are interested in a replacment bearings

It's the bearing for sure, I can see it moving in the outer housing. Thanks for the offer Wab, I'm trying to get a replacement from source. If that fails I'l give you a shout.

            WabTHe King! Question?

You stated ."i said this from the start if you read back through the threads"
I've looked alot of the archive & I can't seem to find your post?
Can you aim me in the right direction? I'm interested in what your objections were to the Alloy mounts?

you can get good quality ones and they are more than a fiver. if you get the motorsport ones they are at least 3 times as much as the standard ones

                        Hi
I got a set a year ago (via Alistair E), after a few 1000 kms they started to make noises. I took them off, and there was a little bit of play in the bearing, so I got some original top mounts. Some of the roads around here has a fair amont of potholes, and there's also som gravel roads, not good for car suspensions . For additional information: I run my car on H&R's and yellow Konis.

When I installed them I didn't lubricate the bearing, there was a thin layer of grease on the bearing. Should I have put on some more grease before installing them? Back then I didn't think so but not sure anymore. Some form of dust protection for the bearing would be nice too.

If possible I am very interested in getting new bearings for the top mounts!!
                        Cheers Leif-Helge

At the introduction of this product I asked what bearings they use, in here forum, and I got same "they are racing bearings" reply. http://www.aurorabearing.com/ this is one highly recomended bearing companyt that you can get bearings without any backlash?. I bought a set of these from QRS and one had a faulty bearing with excess play from day one, I received a replacement and after replacing the dud it was still knocking...
It turned out that the outer housing was cnc'd oversized a tad, which QRS found hard to believe...so did my mechanic, who thought I was crazy to spend such money on untested components.
After much wrangling they finally sent me an entire replacement which is functioning as well as the others.
For the money I paid I expected better quality control, I'm sure the whole design could be improved and built to a higher standard.
Next time I'll try the 2Bennet mounts, as well as being camber adjustable they seem to be a higher grade and more developed design, a friend of mine has punished the crap out of his amped S4 with them in and says they're still as good as new....
