    Strange steering noise

When going from the last half lock -> full lock turning the wheel to the RIGHT, theres a strange noise. Its not a horrible grinding noise, but its a lighter metalic noise, a bit like brakes squealing. Can't feel any resistance through the 'wheel but then its a heavy car...?
Has anyone else had or heard of anything like this before?

    Cheers

ps- its not only when its on its bump stop, so its not necessarily a steering pump problem...

Check your hydraulic reservoir for green fluid.....if its red in colour.....drain, flush and replace immediately........

Also.....top your hydraulic fluid if it is not full/...

Is that what it is? Hopefully. What fluid do I have to buy? I've got hydraulic fluid somewhere in the garage that I could put in, but does it need anything special?

        YES...It does need something special!!!

G2000 GREEN hydraulic fluid from Audi.......or a good independant VAG parts seller.......
Other types damage seals and hydraulic systems on these cars....and can cause dodgy noises

Not saying thats what it is for sure...but its your first port of call in finding the problem!

haha OK! Just saw another thread about hydraulic fluid, and I understand now why you can't put any old fluid in there!

Hydraulic fluid looks very green and full...unfortunately. What else could it be?

Does the steering feel nice and direct or is there a sense of slop/slack/play in there?
other potential culprits could well include:
              1. Worn Top strut mounts
              2. Worn Anti-roll bar drop links
              3. Play in the steering rack union bracket
Ex S2 owner, now running around in an A4 Avant quattro...

Steering feels fine. Only driven the car for 200miles or so, and it hasn't got worse, but I mean I wouldn't know if its been bad since I've had it! Steering isnt great, but then I wasn't expecting it to be as its a heavy old car with its engine seemingly as far forward as It can be! So I wasn't expecting lotus elise sharpness! But i supose the only way to tell if its fine is to get a fellow S2 owner to drive it and see for themselves!

                    Ok possibly slightly daft suggestion:

Is your tyre catching on a mudflap when it's at that much lock?

Clearly if you don't have mudflaps the answer is going to be "no", but the mudflaps don't have to be that much bent out of shape (metal plate-thing in them) to start catching on the tyre - particularly if you've "upsized" to wider tyres.

Rather than bend the mudflaps back in to shape on mine I just took them off.

                    Ck.
Shocked, exhausted, hosed, bushed, dumped, chipped, mounted, filtered, gauged, packed, intermittantly wiped and braked. I mean broken. Now, about the car...

I do have mudflaps but only on the rear! So unfortunately it cant be that!
