Is this right ?? big knocks

Hi, you know i have mentioned the suspension & country roads bumpy driving.
I now am very careful with pot holes etc.
But last night at 40mph was thudding really bad
The lane aint that bad either. If it goes over a drain it thuds aswell.
Fair one its low, but have known cars to be lower & not been as bad as this.

Is this right, as it sounds like a strut has come thru the bonnet when it happens??

Thinking now of taking the car to be fully checked out, as something aint right
on the front passenger side (was pointed out when i first got car, but i said its coz its low etc)& thats where it thuds most.

Had a better drive in Jimmy.

    Cheers

    an unhappy Teen.

What top mounts are you using, i've had problems with the big nut working loose on my alloy mounts which makes a god awfull noise.

Not sure the question your asking..

"Is this right, as it sounds like a strut has come thru the bonnet when it happens??"
The answer would be no. Take it to a garage to have it checked out.

I found the ride on mine to be too firm and too harsh and crashed over every slight bump in the road. I had the alloy top mounts and uprated bushes (not too sure which type). I have replaced these back to stock, and at the same time I had new dampers and springs fitted. Again I opted for standard parts as i didn't want the ride making any harsher. I would imagine that firmer suspensions and bigger wheels would also make the ride firmer. i can relate to the loud thud just above the strut - but don't know how much this was related to the uprated parts or my worn suspension. With everything back to standard my ride is superb to how it used to be, no more noise and crashing over bumps. I guess its the compromise between performance and comfort - I chose comfort - and I'm happy with it - as I found the cornering acceptable, especially with the uprated ARBs which don't affect the comfort at all.

          HI Tina
It could be any manner of things really for example -

          Worn top strut mounts
          Worn ARB drop links
          Worn dampers (shocks)
          Worn wishbone bushes
          Damaged spring
          Damaged alloy wheel
Ex S2 owner, now running around in an A4 Avant quattro...

            Top Mounts = Alloy Mounts
ARB Drop links = 5 months old
Dampers = Brand new Bilsteins 6 months old
Springs = Brand new H&R 6 months old

Bilsteins and Alloy mounts dont work together, i'm changing my top mounts to standard and maybe go Koni shocks, If my car was a sports toy i would have kept the H&R Bilstein combo as the handling is f**king sh*t hot

They were great at first but they're getting progressively worse, plus i've been in Rotoryboy's / 4wheeldrifters Koni'd car and Ant's (Tina's) car to compare the handling and Rotoryboy's car was far more comfy.

Horse's for course, the Bilsteins handle better but Koni give a little more comfort

I should have kept my mouth shut!

There's another opportunity for double entendre in the thread "want a dump valve"

...especially as it was posted by "nip"...

I'm suprised it took that long!....

Anyway, I'd agree with mcandmar and check the security of the alloy top mounts.

They do need regular 'nipping' up when they are new to allow them to seat properly in the strut tower (you'll need a 'C' spanner to do this). Unlike the standard item which is obviously more compliant and moulds itself in there straight away.

what u mean jamo? .... you say alloy mounts and bilsteins dont work ... how?

both are performance parts ... pls explain ... one of my upgrades will be suspension

so i wanna get it right... (a guy said to me alloys last years .. but standard = months)

im after performance... (need 2 know about top mounts ... as qrsport cost £125 for a pair!!!)
