s2 vs rs2 front track control arm

    hi!!

well i would like to ask if sb could tell me if s2 has some track control arms as rs2 does
i have check AKTE and i found out that there are 2 typs of front control arms (one typ is melded and other forged i guess?). Also AKTE numbers for booth are the same for audi s2 and audi rs2, but it sounds very strange for me....colud anyone tell me some more abut this control arms?

Hmm, it seemed the general opinion was S2's with air con had the forged arms, and non air con models had the pressed steel ones. But to me, it seems a mixture - I have broken different S2's in both Coupe and Avant guise, air con and non air con, but there's a lot of variation.

I have found 3B's and early ABY (pre-RS2) seem to have the forged arms, with or without air con. I haven't seen any '95 / '96 S2's with forged arms, they all seem to have pressed steel items. It IS possible Audi decided to reserve the forged arms as part of the RS2 suspension set up, not 100% sure though.

I concur. This is the case. The later cars didn't have the cast arms for some reason.

Some of the V6 models have the cast arms aswell.
There are also other exceptions like the earliest cabrios with NG engine.
      7A sedans had them too.

AKTE is vague at the best of times, it'll simply list both types of arms for the S2, probably by chassis number, I haven't checked. But it'll only list one type for the RS2, forged.

As for which is better, I think they're both ok, and do their respective jobs just fine, they are totally interchangeable, so the choice is yours.

You can tell what type you have on your Coupe easily - if the front arms are different to the rears in terms of material, then you have the cast type, if the same, then they are the pressed ones.

FYI the UR 20V models also have these cast wishbones, they are the same lower case "y" shape as S2. The wheel is centered using a balljoint that is unique for the 20V. Older URs have the upper case "Y" shaped pressed steel ones, which is also used in the rear.

I just bought new ones front & rear and think there is a difference, the cast ones look and feel a lot stronger!

Therefore I wonder, is there a way to fit the cast ones in the back and retain the same wheel position?

The cast arms use a larger diameter bushing which is noticeably stiffer. On the pressed steel ones i can move the steel tube quite easily with my fingers.

Yeah I would agree with that, the bushing is definately much stiffer on the cast ones I received yesterday - as you say you can't move that tube at all. Looking forward to getting them fitted up
