    Wheel Bearing issue

My S2 avant is now about to have it's third Wheel Bearing on the same rear wheel in the last year . The first two were fitted using a proper press by the same garage (I thought the first replacement must have been from a bad batch). The car went to the Audi dealer in February/March for a 4 wheel alignment and I got a call to say "we can't track the car cos this wheel bearing is shot"! So I order another and this time it's fitted by the dealer and 5,000 miles later it's *hagged again.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? or does anyone have any idea while this same rear wheel is doing this?

Is your suspension / hub okay? Do you have any tyre wear. It sounds like something is out of line and destroying your bearing. You WOULD notice this on your tyre too though.

    Just a thought...

Considering wheel bearing last for over 100K, something must be up!
Although the garage may have a proper press, have they used properly? It is essential that the inner race is supported when the hub is pressed back into the bearing. Another critical issue is that the hub bolt be tightened to its specified torque with the vehicle on the ground so that the full weight is present on the component!
Certaintly need to inspect the hub itself as well. When the hub is pressed out its usual for the inner race to stay on the hub. The proper way to remove this is with a two legged puller. However its not unknown for people to resort to angle grinders or cold chisels!
If an Audi dealer fitted a genuine part correctly then I don't think its unreasonable to ask the Service manager how it has failed after such little use. Think there was a discussion recently over the replacement of the bolt as it is a stretch to yield and therefore only suitable for use once. Check your receipt to see whether this was replaced.

Hi there norr s2 there most likely culprit would be the flange you insert into the bearing with the studs on it these have been knowen to been worn badly i changed a wheel bearing on the front of a boys 16v coupe only for the bearing to knakered within 500 miles initially they flange seemed ok but on later inspection you could see were had worn away.

Changed the flange hey presto it seemed to have cured the problem well he has not complained about the bearing and he has covered about 1500 miles since i did it last year

As usual, I've had more ideas/possibile problems identified here in the proverbial 5 mins than half the stealers/garages in the country Obviously, should have come here first

Thanks guys, I'll follow up on all your suggestions prior to the next one being fitted.
