    Wheel Bolts Or Studs?

What would you recommend? I believe Lee has studs on his Avant. Are they more secure?

No difference in security. Makes life easier when fitting wheels especially with big brakes. Important to get right stud length and nut seat type.

I have 2 cars, one with studs and the S2. Getting the tires on the other car is childs play. With the S2, you have to keep everything aligned and it is a PITA when it is dark.

As soon as I have the wheels and brakes exactly as I want them, I am getting the H&R studs.

Do you guys who are having trouble with bolts not have the plastic studs you are meant to screw in to keep everything aligned? I thought they came as standard in the toolkit. If you remove the top bolt first you can screw in the plastic stud - this stops the wheel falling off, and makes ligning it up and holding it there for putting wheels back on real easy.

Ha, Doug, you're forgetting my car is a 14 year old Coupe quattro! Anything like that has long gone.

I snapped off that little piece of **** on a cold, black night when it was nice and brittle. I didn't enjoy backing it out either.

              No m8, studs for me.

It's always worked for me - I have 2 incase I am taking a couple of wheels off - why not buy a long metal bolt and cut the head off

                  Hmmm,

True Doug, ´twould work. Couple of 14 mm bolts and the old Dremel. Bit cheaper too. Good practical solution. Thanx.

Here are some guys who want $25 for that tiny piece of metal. Can you believe it?

Example of cheap studs used by me is Bimec PRD80. Told to be made in Italy. Quality of metal could be valued as medium in my opinion: not total crap, but leave much to be desired if we're after top standarts.

Studs rock, but there are still some disadvantages in using them...

                              Disadvantages?
you need to spend some efforts to lock them properly in the hub. Spline studs rock, but we have thread studs unfortunately.
Maybe some more careful attention to daily nuts torquening should be payed to exclude problems with tread damage or stud unscrewing. Stay away from unexperienced wheel service people.
Forget about possibilities to remove brake disc without removing caliper bracket. Frequent cases, but still...
Procedure of changing wheel bearing on our cars becomes a little bit more complicated.
If you don't want your lugs to stick out of the wheel too much and your thread is just as long as needed for your current rims, forget about using some other possible accidental rims with spacers. There is no such problem with bolts: you can just take other longer bolts and voila. But when you try to put on a heavy wheel with spacer using bolts you probably forgive studs all those disadvantages.
