How much is a new rear subframe OR does anyone have a really decent one that I can buy please?
Now that I've asked the simple question, read below for the reason!
Decided to spend the day under the arseend of the car pulling the rear suspension to bits to see what needed replacing and what I could live with. Decided to put a bit of underseal on the rear subframe as it was rather rusty. Most of it was just the usual surface rust where the original paint had given up.
However, when I removed the rear toe control arm on the drivers side, I noticed that there was excessive corrosion around one of the mounting holes. I did the usual thing and made the problem worse by poking it with a screw driver to try and remove the surface rust and then put some underseal on that too to try and stop the rot.
Unfortunately, the rot had taken hold and there was a hole under the one that Audi had made 12 years ago. This didn't strike me as a particularly great state of affairs so about 10 minutes later after as many 4 letter words as I could fit in, as well as breathing on occasion, I decided that I'd better start to find out what to do about it.
I'll attach a picture of the problem in a bit.
I'm looking to get it back to bare metal and then have a plate welded in to strengthen the area for the short term but really I'm thinking that if the subframe is in this state on the bit I had a poke at then it's not going to be ideal in a lot of other areas.
Basically this leaves me with 2 options:
1 is to get the subframe off and clean it up, see where it's knackered and where it's not. Repair where necessary and the give it a coat of paint.
2 is to get a new subframe.
