    Manual rack conversion

thinking about doing this to my Coupé 3b project.

still researching... am I correct in saying the aby rack is less turns lock to lock?

Has anybody any experience with the conversion? I am looking to either loop the inlet and outlet together with some hydraulic hose. I have also seen on other marques people
strip them down and take the seals out and fill them with grease making a simple rack and pinion only rack.

obviosuly I will be getting vacuum brake booster etc.
will also need guidance with that

    any help greatly appreciated

Unless you have more genetically in common with King Kong than you have with me I’d not even consider a manual rack. If you are going to do it you need to remove the pinion and weld the two halves together bypassing the torsion bar. Then just pack the rack with grease and away you go. As I intimated above you would be mad to do it on a car with a 900kg load on the front axle - why are you considering it?

ABY rack is a straight swap - if you need a plug’n’play vacuum conversion kit I can hook you up, just drop me a PM.

Im just trying to improve the weight and distribution. Plus make it simple as possible, it will be by no means a daily driver. But I will take your word for it if you think it will be terrible. Although if I find a ABY rack I may give it a go.
      PM coming your way.
      Cheers

You don't have them in Europe, but the 1987 to 1993 VW Fox in the USA(imported from Brazil), came with a manual rack that will fit in a Coupe. It was done on a drag racing coupe.

ok i remember a certain subaru built by a very high profile subaru turner with no pas. think it ended up going straight on instead or round the corner.

the aby is less turns. think 1/2 turn less iirc from, my 16v rack to the aby
