in short i think its supposed to be a bitch of a job to be honest and i am not sure how easy it is to do with the engine in situ. SOmeone surely will have done it on here but thats what i am led to believe...

I have done it on my 4cyl diesel. Itsa-bitch. If you are good, takes one day. You need to remove everything you can see above the steering rack. If you have the battery under the rear seat or behind the headlight, it will be a bit easyer. Master brake cylinder out!Audi Quattro WRComment

I always thought the engine had to come out to be able to do a proper job on replacing a steering rack...

That's probably right. It could be easier to take the engine out to gain easier access to the rack anyway.Originally posted by MidnightBlueS2I always thought the engine had to come out to be able to do a proper job on replacing a steering rack...

Good point mate!!
Battery tray delete mod!
It is possible to do this job with the engine in but requires flexi hands/wrists and mucho patience!
To pay a decent cheap garage for repairing yours is about £300 + VAT iirc
Heres a thread about a similiar problem and a few garages who specialise in racks etc

The symptoms are klunking noises when i go over bumps on the road, vague steering, especially with bad cambers or tramlines. I know cars wonder a bit on tramlines ect, but this isnt normal. Also when I wobble the steering wheel from side to side I get a loud klunking noise and i can feel it though the floor and steering wheel. Anyone with anymore ideas???Originally posted by MidnightBlueS2BTW, what are the symptoms that make u believe that you need to change the whole steering rack ?
