Did you fit poly bushes to the wishbones?

Well in relation to this job I was talking about access....
stock 3b has the battery tray in the engine bay right over the right hand side of the rack (looking intio the bonnet)
Makes some jobs in that area a major PITA whereas on an ABY they are a piece of cake due to having lots mroe space....
Unless...of course...you relocate the battery :mischeif:

      These are some other differences

Having a read of this, I am starting to get a little worried.

When turning the steering wheel left or right then I can hear a sort of squeeking noise. I also get a knock through the steering wheel when turning it very slightly left or right but I think this is due to the steering wheel not being put back on correctly as if I apply pressure to the steering wheel (i.e. Push it away from me or pull it towards me) then this knocking dissapears.

But rather more concerning is the fact the car has been tramlining pretty badly, especially since getting new tyres. I will have another check of the tyre pressures when I get home but it has been particularly bad recently.

Just done a PAS rack on a 90Q 20V. A b4stard job, took 5 hours start to finish, and I lost a fair amount of skin. Grrrr...

Got exactly the same issues you have with the squeak and the knock when just turning slightly left or right....can you feel it in the footwell/through your feet when it knocks???

I know that my suspension is in need of a refresh and hope to start that next week but i'm sure the tracking is waaaay out as the back end is all over the place and the steering is vague and light at speed. I'll let you know if it improves once its been tracked as I think its everything that the steering is attached to rather than the rack itelf, theres so much slop in everything it translates back to the steering wheel as play If it ends up being the rack then wil be a good excuse to get the ending out and get the gaskets/seals and sensors replaced which are aPITA to get to normally.

ok, so i checked everything this morning and i do have a load of play in the rack. Basically in the straight ahead position it will move slightly left and right to the tune of about an inch. with the car switched off you can feel it hit each side of the rack/pinion which would answer the very light and vague feeling it has and that mated to probably poor toe on the rear means it's feeling pretty flighty on the motorway to say the least!

So, what rack should I replace it with and is it a job for a DIYer? I have been putting off getting the engine out as there is a few things i need to sort on it but wonder if it will be easier and cheaper to just get someone to do all the jobs at once.

              Any recommendations ???
              cheers
