    Front Wheelbearing

Wot a pain it in the ***, on saturday morning thought i would go in to work and do my wheel bearing as it was starting 2 annoy me, thought it was the OSF because it got louder as i went round a left hand bend but span the wheels on the ramp and it was NSF stripped it down had new discs 2 fit aswell nice drilled 1s, pushed hub out fine then tryed 2 push out the bearing and it wasnt moving put 4000psi on it it wouldnt budge got some heat on it was heating it up for 20 mins nearly red hot still wouldnt move so thought im gunna need a new hub , decided 2 press on it till some thing broke and at about 7000psi it finaly gave up the bearing just poped out then had 2 leave it a hour b4 i pressed the new bearing in.

never had a bearing so hard 2 get out is this comon?

Just to be sure im understanding your post Dan..
Did you take the hub carrier completely off the car and heat it up and press it then?? or was this done in situ?

To answer your question. I've refurbed all 4 of my hub carriers including new bearings,ABS sensors and whatnot and YES.....they are very tight to get out

most pressure registered on the hydraulic press was 14 tonnes iirc for one of the fronts. popped out a treat though as did the others.

Had a similar escapade with my other halfs old A6 2.8 Quattro Avant, front wheel bearing went so i stripped the hub carrier off and took it to a local machinists - they couldnt remove it as their press wasnt able to exert enough pressure to push the bearing out of the hub carrier!.
Had to take it to a Audi Specialists in the end who knew someone with a 30 ton press, apparantly its not uncommon as the front bearings are just interfearance fit - ie no retaining circlip.

      Pete.

On the last wheel bearing I did I started to doubt myself, and wondered if there was a sneaky circlip I hadn't seen before. But nope, It just took loads of pressure. It finally popped out with a big bang! I even had to use 2nd gear on the 7 ton press, as in a scaffold tube on the press lever.

I had great fun doing a front before, i had to use an 8ton hyd press to get it out. It only just managed it too. Rears were a little easier but still a PITA.

Cheers for the warning! Going to do both fronts in the next couple of weeks so will make sure that I find somewhere that can do it!

Best bet is to find a machine shop and leave the hubs into them, thats what i did for my last one, Well worth the €20 to save you all the heart ache.

It was only £10 in your other post on the bush thread, do they charge more for bearings them?

                  Cheers n

Sorry, my mistake, it wasn't you

I had read the oem vs powerflex thread earlier and remembered that someone had made a similar quote and that you were the last poster, so I put the 2 together.

if the outer race wont move, try a ring of weld on the inside of the outer race, this shrinks the race when the weld bead cools.

Going to give All Audi a bell and see who they use. Otherwise, I'll have to call on a couple of contacts!
