    Joss,

Fellow retired mechanic, this is not an uncommon problem with obtaining these particular dampers. Many have had exactly this difficulty.
Because your model is a low production model, this makes finding the exact edition new in a box; more difficult.
I believe that yours, like mine are adjustable. These are marvelous shocks and well worth pursuing.

These small barriers to entry are what makes getting over them worthwhile.

I can't see how many grooves yours might have. If yours need more grooves then perhaps you can return them, or send them to the in country Bilstein facility that handles these requests (certainly contacting them directly can't but help) for modding or have them mod'd privately.
Like many items on these cars, one cannot rely on a supplier to have the required knowledge of them unless they have direct personal experience.
You usually need to know more than the typical supplier.
Please also see the linked to old thread (with a photo) where I expand on what I have said. Despite that the numbering system was different back then, the same principals apply.

    Hope that helps.

I am not trashing the quality of Bilstein dampers as I have used them in the past but what get my back up is they specify for a car that it is not a simple case of replacing the item I understand they are a large business and need to sell lots of units but Bilstein tell the truth about your product or educate your sales people

Its strange KONIs seem to have a shock that is easily adaptable and compatible for the RS2. There are no grooves on my dampers just a metal ring that the spring locator rest on. thanks for the thread

Hi Joss i have dug out a couple of photos from my refurb which shows how far up the shock the spring cup is, i would hazard a guess at somewhere between 30mm to 40mm above the shock absorber fixture/joint. Take a look at what you have on your car and check how high up your bottom spring holer is sitting, that should show if your spring is keeping/holding the body too high.

Pictures below, i only have the prictures before refurb but i think its easy to see what it should be:

your photo shows the spring sitting at the base of the shock mine is seated at least 40mm from the after taking into consideration the thickness of the spring perch to top that it is not adjustable without machining the shock to lower the spring perch which automatically void the warrentee thanks for the pics

              Joss,

WRT warranty, perhaps that is the best way to approach this. Bilstein may be open to a request to add grooves under their warranty to your new dampers, if you can show them how they are unsuitable; but should have been correct out of the box. Your springs are stock (factory paint code markings), correct ?

Is this of any help? Koni shocks with standard spring installed:

This is an earlier photo with the car on OE shocks and springs:
