    Holy ****!!! SOS

Hi guys, tonight coming home from work my steering went vague, i could turn right with the usual accuracy, but when i turned left doing 40mph ish i could turn the wheel 30 degrees before anything happened then it caught up with me. had a look when i got home and found this in the pic below . I need a new one or a replacement asap, i will take this one off at the weekend and weld it up next week at work to do till a new one arrives, If anyone has one available pm me asap, as this is well dodgy.

blimey that was a lucky escape!!!! Unusual for it to break I'd have thought, personally would check everything linked to it (rack, rods etc) to ensure nothing is adding an extra heavy load or torque to it.

      Cheers

I believe my strut tops are a bit fooked, so i have ordered a set of these, plus lately i have been doing some hellish cornering showing these ozzie V8's how a car handles, also she has had a hard time with kerbs and extra deep drains lately, just glad only one side broke.

Right, got it off and found the cause of the problem, it has indeed fatigued, the 2 bolts going through the bracket onto the rack i thought would be fit bolts with captive nuts on the bottom, but now it is off the rack itself is threaded, so i have been checking the torque on the bolts thinking they have been tightening against the nut pulling the whole lot together, instead they have been tightening against the rack so only the top side is secure, the bottom must have been not to the correct torque. Lucky is not the word. It only took 6 mins to get it off like

You would think that as easy as we all drive these cars that such an "unstressed" ten to fifteen year old part would hold up better.
I have ordered a new one with new hardware from the dealership.

                            Jeeeeeez!

That part is absolutely loaded in bending, and of course it fatigues as it has to steer both ways. I've never really understood the merit of a single-ended rack with an overhanging clevis like this - apart from the ability to make the track rods really long and cut down significantly on bump steer I guess.

Glad it didn't end in tears!
