    Subframe nuts!

    Hi all,

I have one of the captive nuts going a bit 'soft' on my on the front subframe, hardly ideal, but there we are. Looking to replace it, but seem to be completely unable to find a supplier.

My car is M10, and the found part number (from this forum) is 893803171. (M12 version is 8A0803171C).

So... any ideas where they can be found, anyone?

Current plan is to get a lump of steel, cut to size and drill/tap it, but I am sure it is much easier to just buy one

Also, idle thinking, I guess as you can replace the nuts, you could 'upgrade' an M10 car to M12? Anyone done it?

    Thanks!

I've had a quick look and so far they are M12
I see Tradition have them if you have a friend in Germany.
I will have another look after dinner for you.

Dave, top man, thanks, amazed anyone has anything like that kicking about, presumed most went to the skip with the shell.

Do you mean the nuts hidden inside the chassis? I've been fortunate enough not to need to replace any of my subframe nuts so have no idea what they look like but, maybe search for m10 captive nut or flat nut and see what google says?

Don't you have to cut into the rail to get at these?

Yeah, Tradition has them, and a pic:

However, no idea what size they are across the flats, or indeed the thickness (which looks surprisingly thin) -dimensions may be something you can help with, Dave? I'm assuming nothing changed in the chassis between M10 and M12!

Be quite happy to make some, in fact have some 40x12mm bar coming in case!

                    M12 are 40mm x 25mm and about 8mm thick
And look the same as above.

Apparently not, there are rubber access plugs in the wheel well, pull them out and have a rummage.

This is the closest I can get as far as an image goes, though this is a B2 chassis (I think) here are a couple of plugs circles in green:

                      frontbrake.jpeg

The B3 plugs are bigger, and I think a little lower down the chassis leg.

I think you find they are in a little cage. I have a b2 chassis leg here and the nut is captive in that. A folded over metal cage holds it loose in a slot. From memory, S2 is similar if not the same.

The chassis leg is for sale. FNS if it all goes horribly wrong . New from Tradition. I didn't need it in the end.
