S2 Rear wishbone - how many types?

Got my car MOT'd today but it failed.

Fortunatley just the one thing, rear o/s wishbone bush play.

I checked it tonight after, and it does indeed have a few mm of play. which probably explains a bit of uneveness/slopyness in the back end recently.

i shouldve picked up on that, but sometimes these things happen gradually so you dont realise.

I've 10 days to get it sorted for a partial/cheaper retest on just that item so need to get the part on order.

My fronts are forged/cast steel thingys, the rears are pressed steel. is this normal? or do the rears come in cast steel also.

The garage wants to order the complete assembly in rather than just the bushes, is this normal? or their way for an easy life and to boost profits?

The pressed wishbones are £50 a piece form Quattro corner in brum.

To tell the truth it would be less time consuming to get a wishbone than to try to change the bushes as far as I am concerned,

More cost if getting a garage to do it too with regards to time spent working on it

      Hi Brian,

As Azman rightly points out, it can be about the same price if not cheaper to order the new pressed wishbones instead of replacing the bushes in the old ones. Also less work for the garage, so you can understand that too.

IIRC all S2 have pressed rears then a a lottery on the fronts, some cast and some pressed...

(I have to change the bushes on the front ones for my MOT too... I am hoping to take them off myself and just ask my local garage to press in the new bushes for me... )

      Cheers,

      Steve.

Use a blow lamp to burn the rubber out then, hacksaw through the metal ring takes about 20 mins each wishbone, i had my local garage press the new bushes in.
Its a lot easier for your garage to just replace the complete wishbone with bushes than just replace the bushes, then you pick up the bill for a new wishbone you dont even need and its a nice easy job for them.

I'd say it easier to just swap out the wishbone, complete with new bushes that are pre-fitted and slap on a new bottom joint into the bargain. Thats more expensive on parts than just buying new bushes, but from a time and hassle factor of actually fitting them I'd go for the new wishbone everytime... The old one can be cleaned up with new bushes and sold to recoup the extra initial spend without any rush.

That would be my approach anyway...

My Avant has cast rear wishbones, when doing the tracking on saturday I had a nose and was quite amazed.

Never ever heard of that! Your Avant has cast lower A-arms? Never even seen it in ETKA for any car that uses that suspension - B4 and B5 body rear susp that is.

I could be mistaken but they are dead ringers for the cast front arms.

I knew I should have taken pics.

Well, I changed my front pressed wishbone bushes just last night and by the time I got to the 4th bush, it took under 3 minutes to remove the old and refit the new

Even though I was at my mates garage, I could not use his press as it is too large to position the wishbone in. If you take yours to a garage to press in, they may well have the same issue, if the base of the press wider than the reach of the wishbone.

I therefore used the old vice and sockets technique, however, after putting all my weight on the vice and still not moving the old bush, my friend showed me a great trick (I guess that's why he runs a garage and I don't)......

....mount the wishbone vertically in the vice so that the inside of the bush is pointing up and strike the outer metal ring of the bush with a cold chisel. Repeat this all the way around bush (so about 8 or 10 places) and repeat couple of times, angling the chisel more and more towards the centre of the bush to fold the outer edge in and create a lip around 5mm or more across. This allows the pushing socket to put all of the force through the outer side wall (which is the bit that is rusted in afterall) rather than just deforming the rubber. It also allows a path in for WD40 if required.

Note, being at a garage, I used an air chisel with a forked tip and this whole process took about 1 minute. I then just used the large & small sockets in the vice as normal and all 4 popped out

                    Cheers n

for something much better. 034 are coming out with upgraded rear wishbones based on the ones I'm running now fr.
When I bought them they were called "Meen Green" wishbones. They were handmade and built with great strength and attention to detail.
